Writers Wanted at Minnesota Monitor

When you apply to write for MnMon, you’re actually applying for a fellowship with the Center for Independent Media’s New Journalist program.

The term of the fellowship is 3 months with the possiblity of renewal once the term expires. The average fellowship is two three-month periods. Fellows receive:

  • a stipend of $4,500 to be paid over three months;
  • editorial mentorship from experienced editors and bloggers;
  • research tools such as Lexis Nexis and access to information databases;
  • legal information, advice and access to legal representation;
  • technical help and consulting;
  • networking opportunities with other bloggers, new media and news makers in the state;
  • possible media booking and other promotion of the work produced; and
  • possible media training and/or newsroom training.

In exchange, fellows are expected to:

  • produce 6-10 blog posts per week on average;
  • fulfill goals in original reporting, to be set on an individual basis;
  • originate news that has an impact on public debate;
  • adhere to the program’s journalistic code of ethics;
  • participate in all training sessions, meetings, and conferences.

UPDATED: The folks at MnMon want you to know that they’re also interested in “freelance journalists and writers who want to work more independently in a faster-paced environment.” Not just bloggers. The blogger part was totally my own two cents and in fact they’re likely more interested in folks with a modicum of a journalism background. Which does not preclude bloggers. You know what I’m saying.
