Pi Bar closing this weekend

The untimely closing of Pi Bar has been discussed in the City Pages Blotter and TC Daily already, but the case deserves an update on its closing this weekend.

The bar and restaurant, which opened in February 2007, will be closing its doors tomorrow after its owners struggled to finance the building in the midst of the economic downturn. Patrons, visitors, and fans of its queer-friendly atmosphere have donated $100, 000 in the hopes of purchasing the building outright, but the building is valued at over six times that. Owner Tara Yule plans to turn over possession of the building on Nov. 29th. Pi art will be auctioned off the walls in the days after it closes.

Pi refuses to bow out sadly, though: Tonight Maria Isa and Kredentials will be performing starting at 9 p.m., with a $5 cover. Tomorrow, Pi will bid goodbye to its space with a lineup of former and current PI DJs spinning tunes ($5 cover).

The consensus is that the bar’s queer- and woman-friendly, “everyone welcome” philosophy will be missed. “There was nothing I ever had to censor at Pi,” says one regular patron. “Not a damn thing.”
