The Joy of the Neighborhood Coffee Shop

Columbia Grounds Logo

My kids and I stopped by Columbia Grounds this morning and were pleasantly surprised to learn that live blues music was on offer. The kids sat entranced as they watched the band play, then we went out and wandered the gardens. In the gardens, we enjoyed looking at the landscaping and ironworks.

Columbia Grounds is a unique place: coffee shop, deli, garden center, art gallery, and gathering place. Because neighborhood coffee shops don’t have a corporate master that demands compliance with specific image guidelines, they can develop their own flavor. I have no objection to the corporate chains, especially when I need an emergency caffeine infusion, but I do prefer the local shop. Do you have a favorite local coffee shop that we should all know about? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Bob’s Java Hut on Lyndale. The coffee is great, the service staff is cool, there are always interesting characters hanging out and the dog watching on the weekends is first-rate.

I moved to NE Mpls about 3 years ago, and Columbia Grounds was one of the first coffee shops I went to. I fell in love and continued to go…….almost daily! Now they know me by name and drink of choice! They have great food too! I would suggest trying the pizza, it’s fantastic!

Columbia grounds is one of the cities best kept little secrets. Whether its for a Cafe mocha with a depth charge and whip cream, or just a quick cup of dark roast this place never fails to please! The garden is a great place to kick off your shoes with a friend , and enjoy a Chicago style dog, and a peaceful romantic getaway from the riggors of the “real world”. We love Columbia Grounds!!!
