Fanciest Ashtray Around

I went out with some friends this weekend, one of which is a smoker. She was standing outside a particular bar in Northeast Minneapolis getting her nicotine fix when the bouncer asked her why she was smoking outside. There’s a smoking ban in Hennepin County, no?

She came inside with her smoke and finished it up where she couldn’t get frostbite, and per the bartender’s instruction, threw the butt on the floor when she was done. I don’t want to mention the bar’s name, because we want to go back. A lot.

Is the Hennepin County smoking band suddenly, um, optional?

Some friends of mine were just saying that they were suprised to find on Friday night that you could smoke inside Decoy’s in Hopkins, too. Apparently the ban only applies to the city of Minneapolis now? This is apparently a detail I overlooked when the ban first went into place.

In the meantime, the statewide ban is getting lots of play in the legislature this week. What a coincidence.

As I understand it, some few Hennepin County bars (not in Minneapolis) have been granted waivers from the smoking ban, but they are only temporary. The waiver provision sunsets this year, I think (unless something changes).
