Take a voyage to your local library

I did a little tour of a few metro libraries yesterday, on a search for some graphic novels. I could’ve done an inter-library loan to the Minneapolis library to get them downtown, but it would’ve taken a few weeks, whereas I was just able to drive to a few Hennepin County suburbs and pick up the items I was looking for.

My first stop was the Southdale Library. I used to love this library when I lived in Richfield. It was large, had lots of stuff, and it kind of looked neat from the outside, with the upper floors being larger than the lower ones. Since then, I seem to find that they never have the books I want, even if it says they’re checked in. In fact, one time, they said they had a book on reserve for me there, and when I arrived, it wasn’t there.

From there, I just made it to the Edina Library before they closed. I know, Southdale is in Edina, but apparently Edina has two libraries. The Edina branch is relatively new, having moved a year or so ago, to a new location behind Jerry’s Foods. It’s an attractive branch, very homey feeling, although it was kind of difficult to figure out where things were. The colours are a lot more attractive than at the Southdale branch, too. Very warm woods.

My last stop on my Magical Literary Tour was the St Louis Park Library, which is kind of hidden, tucked away behind Park Tavern. This was my favourite of the three, with a nice layout and a business that was kind of nice, making it feel like it was a regular meeting place. They need some more self-checkout points, though.

I had also wanted to go get something from the Maplewood Library, but the scooter just wasn’t gonna get me there on time. Maybe this weekend.

As far as I know, if you have a library card at any Minnesota library system, you can check out books at any other Minnesota library — they’ll need to type you in to their particular system, but you don’t need to get another card. So you can get books from Minneapolis, St Paul, Hennepin County…any of those. It’s nice.
