Minneapolis Critical Mass bike ride

Until I stumbled upon this entry, I had no idea there was “a ‘happy coincidence’ of bike riders assembl[ing] all across the nation in metropolitan areas as a show of solidarity for people-powered transport.”

Sounds like a fantastic idea, right? Looks like the Minneapolis cops are none too happy about it, though. I noticed that one of the incidents holisticgeek describes happened on Hennepin and 6th Street. Some friends and I were just talking last night about the increased police presence in downtown Minneapolis, particularly Block E, and how it has become more of a nuisance than a necessity. Cops harassing people for no reason in particular, just to break up small groups that might start to congregate outside businesses. Who are they protecting? The people or the businesses? One person in our group also noted that there is plenty of crime, including shootings, going on in her neighborhood in Minneapolis just south and west of downtown, but the police presence there is nearly nonexistent. What’s going on?

I’ve heard of Critical Mass, but I’ve never actually seen it taking place, and I didn’t realize it was a nationwide thing. I can’t believe police officers were just yanking people off bikes. Assholes! If these riders were in the midst of the otherwise peaceful crowd, what could those individuals possibly have been doing to warrant that kind of treatment? Unless they flipped off the officer or something.

That was a great write up of the event.

So I’ve been biking through downtown a couple times in the last week, and each time… there’s a police car just doing something obnoxious. The last time my wife and I had to deal with one blocking the bike lane.

In related news there were sheriffs on bikes arresting people outside of some building on Hennepin… for no apparent reason. It was rather sketchy looking on the part of the sherrifs.
