OBEY Sightings

Giant @ Lake and Lyndale
Shepard Fairey was in town for the opening of his show at OX-OP on Washington Ave. and coincidentally a number of OBEY pieces popped up around town. I was thrilled that one of the larger ones happens to be in a nice spot up the street from my house. It should stay intact for quite some time.

Robot Love
has a nice page with a few more photos than I have.

Urban guerilla art is always temporary. Keep your eyes peeled for these as you’re around town. The OBEY campaign is one of the first and only of this scale and is a classic piece of modern pop culture.

I know that OBEY makes expensive, ratty clothing that for some reason the same folks who like cutesy Japanese stuff also like–but what is their “campaign”?

yikes. somebody likes to generalize. :)

    The internet knows all.

It’s frickin’ Andre the Giant’s face??!!!

That is just beyond weird to me. Maybe it’s just because I’ve been totally unaware of this until earlier this year–but I just don’t get it. I don’t see the humor or art in it.

And I dare anyone to try to prove me wrong about the generalization. :)

Thanks for the wikipedia link, Mister Jason. I enjoy culture jamming, but not everyone has a taste for it.

Yeah, ha ha. I didn’t know it, but yes, I do enjoy culture jamming (never heard it called that). I’ve been an occassional fan of Adbusters. Now *that* I do get, and usually like.

But can someone please just explain to me the connection between Andre the Giant, posses, graffiti, expensive hipster clothing, and Giant Robot-esque Japanese stuff? Because somehow all this adds up to OBEY and it makes no sense to me. Especially the connection to cutesy Japanese stuff.

“ANDRE THE GIANT HAS A POSSE 7′ 4″, 520lb” is what was printed on the first round of stickers that Shepard Fairey and his pals printed up years ago. It was just a joke directed at skateboarders in the area at the time. That’s the kind of posse we’re talking about here.

Graffiti isn’t exactly connected since the pieces I was pointing out are actually pasted-up paper. Giant Robot-type stuff wasn’t connected until an earlier post put them together. Obviously, they’d been assaulted by someone at some point who was into both things. On that note, I know of a Doctor of Biomechanics who’s into D.R.I. I suppose that means all of those biomechanics geeks are into hardcore.
