I suppose it was a matter of time

For the past two days, 89.3 The Current has been running their first pledge drive. So far it hasn’t been too obtrusive for me, but it would be kind of cool if they had a second stream for people, like me, who’ve already contributed. Something along the line of “enter your MPR ID and you don’t have to listen to the requests for cash”. They’re still playing lots of cool music, although this morning it does seem a lot more folksy than usual. If you do call in and pledge, and apparently, even if you don’t, you get entered into a drawing for an iPod Mini. They have other extras which are pretty nice if you pledge at a ten dollar, fifteen dollar or twenty dollar a month level. I’m excited that we finally have a decent radio station in the TC, so I decided to pledge a couple of weeks ago. Give the people what they want, and they’ll actually spend money for it, I guess.

Yeah. Why don’t they do the “buy back the drive” thing. If we all pleadge ahead of the drive, then they cut off days according to how much of their goal is met ahead of time. What is the goal anyway, and how come they don’t ever say how far towards it they are?

I thought they said their goal was around $16,000. But I could be dreaming. If so, they must be close because last night I heard they had 12 members in the CD of the Month club, which costs $1200.

I would imagine that the end of this fund drive is more determined by time than funds raised.

Pure conjecture on my part, but as this is a new service there really isn’t a benchmark to determine what can/should be raised over a given length of time. This isn’t taking into account the fact the *more is better* for funds at this point since they’re building eseentially from the ground up.

As far as the stream goes…it’s a stream of the broadcast audio! :) It would be neat though.

I joined this time around precisely because of The Current. I’ve been listening to MPR for awhile, but was so pleased to hear Mary Lucia and Mark Wheat back on the radio, I couldn’t justify skipping the pledge drive again.

That, and I dig the random music they play. I get some Ella Fitzgerald and some Beastie Boys… even back to back. I’m much more willing to listen to the pledge-drive yammer in between that than the standard fare.
