NCMR 2008: Part Conference, Part Rally

Peter Fleck has a good first blush on the National Conference of Media Reform, so I’m not gonna reinvent that wheel.

Free Press site has links to all the major keynotes and plenary sessions from the National Conference for Media Reform and I think they are uploading video of all the sessions this week (and beyond—there were so many excellent sessions and it’s probably going to take some time). Here’s the video archive. Local folks will want to listen to Keith Ellison’s impassioned plea around reform and Janice Lane Ewart’s [sic] (KFAI Radio) opening address. Bill Moyers’ and Dan Rather’s vids are up too. Watch for Naomi Klein, Amy Goodman, Shá Cage, Arianna Huffington, and Van Jones. For a twitterful view of the NCMR check Twemes. [Erica’s note: Or Summize.] The official tag for the conference was NCMR2008.

The Minnesota Independent (formerly Minnesota Monitor/MnMon and henceforth known as MnIndy) has a wrap-up, including audio from sessions MnIndy folks participated in.

The Uptake has spectacular footage. The best of the best is the FOX News ambush of PBS’s Bill Moyers and coverage of the Live From Main Street Town Hall which took place Sunday afternoon after the conference. Find the full program in the on-demand content at their Mogulus channel and clips at their blip.tv channel [1] [2] [3] [4].

I’ve got a rough cut of my notes from the sessions I attended over at my place.

Never did find out what was up with the polar bear.

Dan Rather in town today, at KARE 11 and NCMR

Here’s a photo I took about 5 minutes ago sitting here at the National Conference for Media Reform (sitting directly next to Erica, mind you)
Dan Rather on KARE 11 and in front of my face

Here’s a link to the story I was browsing of Rather on KARE 11 today. I’m sure I’m not the only one wondering why not CBS-affiliate WCCO?

Also, Minnesota-born comedian and Daily Show creator Lizz Winstead split emcee duties.

A reminder: The National Conference for Media Reform is holding its annual conference in Minneapolis starting today and running through the weekend.

Tons of big names are in town for this. I’ll be there, tweeting my favorite parts and any moving comments or poignant theories if you care to follow me. Hashtag is #ncmr

Walk-up registration is open to the public. If you can’t make it, there will be live webcasts, podcasts and even a feed on DISH Network. More info here.

Citizen Journalism Fundraiser at Trocadero’s Tonight

In conjunction with the ongoing Journalism That Matters/New Pamphleteers conference and the National Conference for Media Reform, there’s a big shindig tonight at Trocadero’s.

Hosted by the Twin Cities Daily Planet and KFAI, the Party for a Media Revolution will start at 8:00pm and feature a whole bunch of hot local music acts (International Reggae All Stars, Cadillac Kolstad and the Flats, Willie Murphy and the Angel Headed Hipsters, Dan Newton, Spider John Koerner, and more).

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

Somewhere between the 90 or so folks at the JTM conference and the 3000 people expected for NCMR, it should be a rockin’ good time, for a good cause.
