Minneapolis sports fans should pick up this weeks issue of Sports Illustrated simply for the comedy factor. Randy Moss is on the cover whining about how he can’t have friends and the kiss-ass article inside was borderline nauseating. I think that his agent wrote it.
Edina High School gets props as well for having one of the best 25 High School Sports programs in the country. To top it off, Steve Rushin wries his column on Sid Hartman of the Star Tribune.

Citypages Twins Stadium Article

This week’s Citypages article on the Twins Stadium deal is outstanding! It’s amazing that they managed to negotiate this for over a year without the smallest leak to the media or legislature. I don’t know whether to be afraid or in awe of the fact that this thing is one small vote from happening without the say of the people.
Fortunately, I have the Vikings Onterrio Smith to keep me laughing!

Mpls weekend

I spent a lot of time this past weekend in downtown Mpls. Caught Garbage at First Ave. on Friday night–what an awesome show and a great venue! The crowd queing up for the Garbage show juxtaposed with the crowd going to Target Center to check out Sir Elton John made for an interesting mix of styles. The only question I have is, why do the beggars/scalpers/scammers who want to talk to you in line and shake you down for a few bucks to get “bus fare” (read: booze & drugs) have the nerve to get attitudes when you cut off their spiel and tell them to hit the road? Are they used to “Minnesota Nice”? I’m from Detroit originally. I’m used to telling bums to hit the road fast.
The Twins game on Sunday was awesome for baseball fans (a 2-1 pitchers duel) but the propaganda film that the Twins made us watch in support of their new stadium was a little nauseating. Yes the Dome sucks, but don’t tell us that after we’ve paid $30 to get in! It was also questionable on the Twins part to have the ushers pass out postcards that we’re supposed to mail in to our Commissioners to support the new stadium. “Thanks for coming to our craphole of a dome that we want to replace, will you fill out a postcard for us too after you got your $30 seat?”
Oh, Kristin Stinar is alive and well.

Randy Shaver loses credibility.

I was pressing the presets on my radio desperately looking for something worth listening to and I heard the sports report on 93X (yeah, I know..) Anyway, Randy Shaver was doing the sports and he mentions Vince Carter’s game-tying shot last night and praises him for being a good player now that he can team up with Jason Kidd and the supporting cast of the Nets. WHAT? How could he not mention the fact that he completely quit on the Toronto Raptors? Almost every credible media outlet regarding sports (ESPN, FSN, Sporting News, heck–even USA Today) has called Vince Carter’s “resurgence” the most shameless case of “dogging it” ever perpetrated on sports fans. Hmm…I expected better.

While I’m sure that Kristin Stinar will be OK, it brings up the question: if it is Cancer that she is fighting, does it really do much of a service to show her struggle? Cancer has affected almost 100% of the population either directly or indirectly. Does anyone NOT know someone who has had to fight this disease? It’s terrible, but unfortunately it’s not unique. While the network of survivors is extremely valuable for someone who is suffering, I think for many people it will just bring up terrible memories.
While we’re discussing local TV News (UGH!), I must say that Karen Leigh from WCCO is quite the hottie. I’m surprised that City Pages didn’t have that as a category in their ‘Best Of The Twin Cities’ Issue.

Does anyone think that KSTP is using the illness of one of their own reporters for ratings? In the veiled promos for their story, they refer to a terrible illness (cancer?) that their reporter is fighting. Is this shameless exploitation or a valuable news item?

Garbage at 1st Ave. Friday

I’m so excited to see Garbage play at First Avenue on Friday. If you haven’t seen them play live you must! IT should be an awesome show! What I’m wondering is: Where should I go afterwards? I spend my wekend evenings in St. Paul usually.

St. Paul Saints Baseblog night

The St. Paul Saints are having a special “Baseblog” night for Twin Cites bloggers & readers on June 13th. If you go to their group website and enter the password ‘blog’ a special offer pops up for a General Admission ticket, hot dog, soda and a hat for only eight bucks. (you’ve got to have your cookies enabled on your computer or it won’t work.)If you’ve always wanted to go and couldn’t get tickets, this is a good way to go.
They’ve got a lot of funny promotions coming up this summer, too. They’re having a sleepover doubleheader on May 7th & 8th. The game on the 8th starts at 5:30AM! Peace Coffee is also promoting a game where you can buy your enemy (or someone you just kind of don’t like) a ticket to a game. Just go to the same group website and enter the password ‘peace’.

I went to the Metrodome last night to see my beloved Tigers lose to the Twins. What can be said about the concrete balloon that hasn’t already been said? Nothing. Lets focus on something the Twinkies could control:
I enjoy visiting gentlemen’s clubs as much as the next guy (probably more), so I have no problem seeing 21-year-old girls in five-inch heels and short dresses. What I don’t expect is to see them in those outfits as you exit the stadium (on a Tuesday night?) passing out VIP admission cards for Rick’s Cabaret ! They were standing right outside the main exit. I doubt if the average family of four who went to see Torii Hunter & Joe Mauer would consider stopping at Rick’s on the way back to Woodbury. I’d be shocked if the Twins condoned this, but if they do, let’s get some cheerleaders!

Why do the Concerts pass us by?

One thing that I don’t understand is why MPLS is not an automatic stop for national concert tours. I just found out that Kraftwerk and Ivy are both playing Detroit & Chicago, but bypassing the Twin Cities.
Am I the only one upset by this?
