"The Business of Blogging"

A recent issue of Twin Cities Business Magazine profiled several local business people for whom blogging is a key part of their communication strategy. It features Geri Wolf of The Style Laboratory, Susan Schneider of Plus Relocation, Graeme Thickins of GT&A Strategic Marketing, and Alex Stenback of Behind the Mortgage.

Multiple uses of the term “positioning.” Lots of chatter about the right way to do a business blog. I’d say important terms are “authentic” and “transparent.” I want to hear someone’s expert opinion, but I also want to hear the real scoop. That does not necessarily mean I need your personal details in order to humanize you. Talk like a real person, not like you’re marketing to me.

There’s also a list of business blogs compiled by TCBmag. I’ve only heard of about a third of them, but then business blogs are pretty niche. Any faves among the bunch?

(via none other than Alex Stenback, whose dapper photo is featured)

Nice post, I haven’t read a bunch of these either.

I would have to say that the most influential business blog that I read from minnesota aren’t on that list, but I suppose they are fairly niched but here goes:
    http://www.toprankblog.com - Lee Odden
    http://www.aimclearblog.com - Marty Weintraub

Two local rock stars of SEO and SEM

I’ve not heard of any of these business blogs and I work for a major corporation in the Twin Cities. Guess I need to get out more.

I did like the "Who I met at Demo 08" post found at http://graemethickins.typepad.com/ Especially the caption to the second photo in which it appears hardly a soul attended the conference.

Actually Lee Odden was on the list.

Behind the Mortgage is one of my faves, but then that’s only because I might maybe buy a house m’self someday. Like Ed Kohler said over at mnspeak, "I think the ones who are doing well have basically taken content - in most cases, advice - they were delivering on a 1 to 1 basis and blogging it instead."

Also interesting how biz bloggers may be big in their niche, but not necessarily big in the local blogger landscape. Not to declare myself the arbiter of locally internet famous people. I’ve come across Graeme Thickins before and I had no idea he lived here. I guess it depends on your business whether it’s beneficial for you to be known locally and/or online and/or locally online.

Erica, Graeme lives in W Bloomington. You’re practically neighbors. He’s a crazy cool surfer dude who’s into working with tech start-ups.
