In poor taste?

I was walking back to the office this afternoon through the warehouse district, and passed by Drink at their downtown location. Plastered all over the windows were advertisements for their Cinco de Mayo festivities, which they are somewhat accurately calling “Cinco de Drinko”.

Perhaps I’m being overly sensitive, or too politically correct, but I found these ads to be a little bit offensive. I think it’s probably the blatantness of the ads. I mean, yeah, we co-opt holidays all the time, but now it seems that we’re just going to call it what it is–a way for bars to sell more liquor. I guess I get a little bit of the same feeling around St. Patrick’s Day, when it truly seems like a big marketing scam to sell booze, and encourage binge drinking. I doubt I’ll be out drinking this weekend, but I will be taking part in another event on Saturday, 5 May 2007.

Yeah, I’m a nerd.

Yeah, it is in poor taste. It’s fucking DRINK. :-)

But the place is called “Drink”! It would be different if all the bars called it that.

I’m more offended that it doesn’t really make sense.

My office had a huge Tres de Mayo party on Thursday, complete with a mariachi band, nachos, Coronas, taco bar and margaritas. Oh, and probably 10 people were wearing sombreros. I felt a little uncomfortable — it was like a bad episode of NBC’s The Office — but I definitely indulged in some food and beverage, regardless.

I’d say it’s definitely in poor taste, for sure. Doesn’t surprise me at all coming from a bar. Especially a bar like Drink. Ugh.

    I’ve changed my opinion.

How many people at Drink on May 5th actually knew what Cinco de Mayo even celebrates? How many of them thought they were celebrating El Grito de Independencia de México?

Then again, do we remember why Saint Patrick’s Day is on March 17th? Which Saint Valentine(s) the day is named after? Which Presidents we are honoring on Presidents Day? We paint and hide eggs and eat unhealthy marshmallow baby chicks delivered by a bunny with plastic grass to celebrate the holy disappearance of a Jewish carpenter killed by Romans over 2,000 years ago. What’s your God think about that?

At Drink, any night they’re open, you can order an “Irish Car Bomb” which is likely to be more offensive to someone from Belfast than the “Cinco de Drinko” night is to someone from Guadalajara.

So I guess, drink up for Cinco de Drinko. They should have it every 5th of the month. Why not?
