American Apparel to open in Uptown

First there was buzz, and now it’s official. Early August is the projected opening date.

My thoughts:

  1. It’ll pretty much attract the same crowd as the American Eagle did.
  2. It’s a “rare victory for Uptown” according to that Strib article. One new chain does not a victory make. *cough*Calhoun Square*cough*
  3. I cannot for the life of me remember what was in that space before American Eagle.
  4. American Apparel is a slightly less kiddie porn Abercrombie & Fitch, right?
  5. For those looking to bring more “edginess” back to Uptown, I’m not sure Uptown necessarily needs to be more edgy. It needs to be more something, though, because it’s feeling kind of bland.
  6. That “something” does not include “family-friendly.” I think it should be “Family”-friendly. Bring back the gay ghetto, I say.

I’d like to thank AA for keeping a steady supply of hawt girls in the sidebar ads on Gawker. Hopefully the opening of the new Uptown-saving store will translate to girls in Minneapolis looking like the ads. YAY!

Hey now! This is great news!

It’s not the same crowd! American Eagle shoppers are too young for Abercrombie. American Apparel shoppers would never go into Abercrombie. It’s a more hipster/young professional/organic crowd.

Calhoun Square was just bought by some firm. So, that’ll be fixed soon too. With the new hotels and condos (as lame as they are for a guy who likes the Northeast infinitely more), at least it shows signs of growth. And, it throws more people down there, which is always a good thing.

“American Apparel is a slightly less kiddie porn Abercrombie & Fitch, right?”
They’re ads sure are. But their clientele and “we don’t make our stuff in some sweatshop” mission isn’t. I guess AA’s owner is some sex-crazed sleaze though (too lazy to find the many articles on that…)

Uptown has moved on. It will never go back to being edgy, so it needs to move on to being more upscale. The hotels and condos feed into this, and so does AA. If it keeps hanging on to its “neighborhood feel” (like its Association wants) or its artsy-ness (which everyone wants, including me) it won’t survive. I would think the property values are just too high for that now.

“Bring back the gay ghetto, I say.”
My gay grandpa used to tell me stories. Holycrap.

    They have cool headbands.

That’s about the only value I see from the selection on their website.

    Ahem. Postitis too earlyitis.

The tees, skirts and dresses are straight out of a Poison music video. It looks like nobody over a size 4 can shop at that damn place.

Hooray! I love AA. Even if their CEO is a bit of a perv.

I’m actually looking at RSAV404 Velour Long Sleeve Raglan; hopefully I can start a new trend in velour long sleeve shirts.

That’s hot, Taylor. Are you getting the red one?

I’ve really only thought of AA as a t-shirt place. It’s never really occured to me to shop there for other things. Probably because I’ve only ever ordered their t-shirts online and not gone into an actual store.

I’ve always thought of AA as a t-shirt place — well, and having saxy ads — but now that I now they’ve got all sorts of stuff, like this blue one-piece for tha lahy-dees, I think Uptown should be ready for a revolution.

My wife bought a t-shirt-material dress from AA in Chicago, she said it’s super comfy. It’s orange.. and very cute.

“saxy”? Is that a cross between sexy and sassy?

Jason, I’m a bit skeptical, but your wife is super cute and I’m sure could totally pull it off, so I’ll trust her judgment.

I’m fine with AA. My experience so far has been through bands that use AA to source their t-shirts. It’s nice to have well-proportioned clothing.

“saxy”? Is that a cross between sexy and sassy?

Yup. I’m coining the term celebrate the opening of the store.

I’m a dude, so I’m not really sure, but I think this is the dress.

The t-shirts are a little tight for my lumpy frame. Is that TMI? Maybe.

  14. Ang (unregistered) on May 18th, 2007 @ 4:24 pm

Jason, that dress is cute. But like the teeshirts, it looks a little too tight for my lumpy frame.

  15. Erica M (unregistered) on May 18th, 2007 @ 4:25 pm

You should order an AA t-shirt ahead of time so you can wear it to the opening.

Well-proportioned, eh? I’ll have to do some trying on, just to see. After browsing their website, there’s not necessarily a whole lot I think I’d buy, but even something as basic as getting a comfy t-shirt that feels nice and fits well is a great find.

Yeah, Jason, you’re such a pudge. That’s a totally cute dress. For people (like Alyssa) that can wear that sort of thing. I am not one of those people.

It’s unfair. Her favorite food is the cookie and she never goes to the gym. She’s pregnant and is barely gaining weight. I looked at a cookie yesterday and gained 5 pounds.

You know what would make you slimmer, especially on camera? A long sleeve raglan shirt made of velour.

I think of American Apparel as the new Gap. Basics that look good, for a decent price.

The quality of Gap products has declined a lot in the past couple decades. I feel like today’s Banana Republic basics are the same approximate quality as yesteryear’s Gap merch, for a higher price. So I’m happy to see American Apparel in my hood.

Are you guys trying to push me over the edge into full-fledged blipster?

  20. Ang (unregistered) on May 18th, 2007 @ 6:57 pm

Oh, blipster? New term. Not familiar.

Alyssa is horrified we’re talking about her. And of course, she’s correcting me. She bought a skirt. This skirt. In orange. Very cute. She says, “I wouldn’t mind that dress, though. In a non-pregnant state.” I think she’s trying to suggest a birthday present idea. Too bad AA doesn’t open in time for Tuesday.

  24. Erica M (unregistered) on May 20th, 2007 @ 11:02 am

Pier 1! Aha! I knew it.

Blipster…I remember when that article came out in the Times. It made me want to find someone and punch him/her in the face.

AA SUCKS! The founder is a loser and also sold out to a private equity firm. He also scared employees not to form a union because HE is basically running a sweatshop. Their principals were long gone with their success…capitalism.
