Wrapping up those 7 Gifts

Get it? Wrapping up? I kill me.

To recap, here are our 7 Gifts to the World:

#7: The Great Gatsby
#6: The Minneapolis Sound
#5: Rollerblading and Water Skiing
#4: Bob Dylan
#3: Peanuts
#2: Post-it Notes and Scotch Tape
#1: Mall of America

Survey says the MOA was definitely not a good choice for #1. Just missing the cut, perhaps erroneously, was our fucking awesome arts scene. Others we left off: Best Buy, the Nordic Track, and Snickers.

So what say you? Should we have ranked them differently? What should we have left off? What else might we have included, or what would round out the Top 10? To jumpstart your brain, here’s a list of 50 facts and trivia bits about Minnesota.

First I want to say nice job on the posts. But since you asked, I would take the Great Gatsby off the list. Sure F. Scott Fitzgerald grew up in St. Paul, but I doubt it was the inspiration for the novel. Its more like a gift from New York or Long Island. Also, according to wikipedia, he attended St Olaf’s but “hides this part of his education and instead embellishes his Oxbridge era.”

Great job on the posts. I know it probably belongs there, but I would have left off the MOA. Because I hate it. It’s a noisy, smelly, monstrous shrine to consumerism. Thanks for asking.

I’m considering the MOA the white elephant gift.

USA Today on Dec 1… 10 slides about the hip side of Minneapolis… ends with: “All of this activity has ensured that Minneapolis is no longer known just for the Mall of America but for the rich cultural life that locals have been cultivating for years.”

I also think The Great Gatsby should be taken off. MOA should stay up there but not at #1. Agree that Best Buy should be on the list, as should the Mayo Clinic. #1 to me is a toss-up between Peanuts and Post-It Notes…
