No basketball at NBA City?
I don’t have cable at home, so I’ve taken to going to NBA City to watch any basketball games I want to see. Because not only do they have ESPN, Fox Sports, etc., they get NBA TV. I would go there to watch WNBA games on ESPN2, and now the FIBA World Championships are playing on NBA TV. Even if I did have cable at home, I wouldn’t have NBA TV.
I’ve gone to NBA City enough over the last few months that a lot of the staff at least recognize me, and some know me by name. Usually I go in and sit at the bar, and request to have a tv put on the channel I’m there to see, if it’s not up already. I haven’t had a problem with it so far.
Only once have I been in there and the restaurant’s been anywhere near what I would call busy. That was on a night after a Lynx game when players were there signing autographs.
So, as usual, I sat at the bar, said hello to my favorite bartender Amy, and asked the guy with the headset on if I could get one TV turned to NBA TV.
And he said no, they had football showing. I said, “This is NBA City and you can’t turn on NBA TV?”
He said they had all the TVs wired in together for football. There was a little bit of discussion, and they finally said that they could tune one TV over in a corner to NBATV and that they could serve me over there. So I went and sat at a table. I was the only person in that entire section. And I watched Team USA romp all over France.
My buffalo chicken pizza was great. I was disappointed that when I asked at 12:10 if there were any specials my server told me there were none, but 30 minutes later, after I had ordered a mixed drink, she told me that there were $2 drafts. I know that 12:30 isn’t the magic start time for beer specials.
If I walked in and the restaurant was busy, I wouldn’t even think of asking them to change a channel just for me. But they weren’t busy at all this Sunday at noon. There were a few more people at the bar than usual, but most of the rest of the entire restaurant was empty.
Maybe I need to inquire next time about how the tv channels get set. Maybe it’s a lot to expect that they can change a channel for me. Because every person that walks in could ask to have a channel changed and I know that’s unreasonable. But you know what? The joint was not full. If you have three TVs in a row showing the same thing, do they all really need to stay on that same channel? Why can you change individual TVs on some days, but not on others?
Of course, by the time I eat twice at NBA City, I’ve already paid a monthly cable bill, so maybe I should just give my money to Dish instead and stay home.
