Wireless Minneapolis Pilot Testing

Got this Wireless Minneapolis update from the city:

Construction is now complete on two pilot projects that will test the capabilities of the two finalist vendors seeking to partner with the City to make Wireless Minneapolis a reality.

Two community organizations in the pilot areas are hosting pilot demonstrations and open houses to give folks the opportunity to learn about the wireless network, participate in hands-on demonstrations of the technology, and share their ideas on how the network should benefit the community.

Community Sponsored Pilot Demonstrations & Open Houses
10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Saturday, July 8, 2006
Phyllis Wheatley Community Center, 1301 10th Ave. N.

4 - 8 p.m., Friday, July 14, 2006
Brian Coyle Community Center, 420 15th Ave. S.

City staff, elected officials, and representatives from the wireless vendors will be available to field questions and gather suggestions regarding the Community Benefits.

Internet access using the network will be free and open to the public during the 60-day trial period. Just come to one of the community meetings for instructions on how to log into the system. Please keep in mind that these two pilot areas are test networks and there is no guarantee of service or availability of the networks since they will be taken down periodically for testing, maintenance, upgrades, etc.

Time to break out the jammers!

Seriously, this is great that they’re going ahead with the project regardless of the assorted lawsuits that the major ISPs have been filing like mad in other states.

    Really? What sorts of lawsuits?

Would be nice to have log-on information available outside of the two sessions identified above. Those of us that missed them would still like to know how to log on!

Mary, I totally agree. I’m guessing they don’t want to give that information out so as to keep the ravenous public from overwhelming the limited scope of the current infrastructure…?

But seriously, though, I’m sure there are plenty of people (myself included) willing to test it out (and give feedback) that couldn’t make it to the pilot sessions.

I just sent an email to the city asking if there’s any way to find out any of the info given out at the demo sessions and/or to participate in the pilot test. If I get any useful information back I’ll post again.

You can get maps of the pilot areas on the city’s website, but nothing else.

Attention all. For logging into the SE wireless pilot site simply go to that area and connect to the wireless. The network is open and utilizes a captive portal technology which means connect and open a browser window. The first time you try to browse out it will take you to a different page that is specific to the minneapolis wireless. From there you will see a login box on the left and just below that a signup link. Click on the signup link and fill out the information and then you will be able to login and browse the internet. During the 60 day test phase this login will be free and the account will be removed from the system automatically at the end of the trial period. If you have any questions about the wireless or need some assistance there is a link on that first page to chat a support representative.
