I’m over the Running Room

I’m not so much into Running Room anymore. When I first started running, I went in to the Uptown store to get my first real pair of running shoes. Folks were nice and very helpful. I like that they have twice-weekly “run club” runs which are free to anyone who wants to show up.

But I’ve been disappointed on practically every other shopping trip. I went in today to ask about a water-carrying solution. They carry the FuelBelt brand, but there’s also the Amphipod brand out there, there’s CamelBaks, etc. I was most interested in comparing the Amphipod to the FuelBelt, but the employees that were there this morning didn’t seem to know anything at all about Amphipod. I understand that you want to pimp your own gear, but at least be knowledgeable about your competitors.

And I really don’t want to be upsold on shoes. I’ve inquired about the shoe that I first bought there that they don’t carry anymore, and they made it sound like I couldn’t get them at all and it really would be in my best interest to upgrade (i.e., spend $30 more on a pair of shoes). Now that I know what kind I like, I’m perfectly happy to go to Dick’s Sporting Goods and pick them up there.

I’ve heard people recommend Gear and Run N Fun, so I’ll be checking those out next time I need to pick up some gear. I’ll still go to Running Room for race signups and the occasional run club jaunt, but I don’t think I want to buy any more of my gear there.

The Running Room helped me buy a great pair of shoes, but as far as other gear, I’ve noticed their limited selection as well. I went online for my Amphipod and am glad I did. I find it comfortable and easy to use.

I’m a little skittish about that, just because I really would like to be able to try the belt on. I went on and bought a FuelBelt from Running Room, but I’m going to keep shopping around.

I recommend Marathon Sports (www.marathonrunwalk.com) near 50th and Penn or Runners Edge Athletics (www.runnersedge.com) on Grand Ave in Saint Paul. Both of these stores are locally owned and operated unlike the Running Room. The Running Room is Canadian owned and I think sometimes this affects the product lines they stock. Both of the places I’ve suggested are very small but employ experienced runners who give great advice. At the very least they are worth checking out.

Oh, yeah, I’ve heard Marathon Sports, too. And I did go to Runner’s Edge this weekend. I think this is going to warrant a follow up post.
