Do We Really Want ‘Creative Destruction’ In St. Paul?

The latest GOP/conservative talking point [1] on the possible bailout [2] of the Big Three U.S. automakers is the term “creative destruction,” meaning the sooner the Detroit-based automakers collapse, the sooner something better will spring up to take their place. Minnesota has a stake in this discussion, as we still have a functioning truck plant in Saint Paul [3]. Do we want to take a chance that something better will come along, or is America’s auto/truck industry too important to risk? Discuss. (Full disclosure: GM is a partner of the American Lung Association of Minnesota [4], where I work as communications director.)
