Care to talk football?
Football! Or really FOOTBALL!!!!!! is an IM I receive atleast a fewtimes a week during football season.
This weekend, with the Vikes taking a week off to lose some weight, the Gophers stepped up for the big W against Purdue.
Which brings two things to mind:
1) From the Williams’ article “A text message to Pat Williams was not returned. ” just makes me think HUH?!! A text message? Really, what did it say “RU doping?”
2)The Gophers are now ranked #20 in the country and #17 by the BCS. Go Gophers!
FOOTBALL!!!!
Discuss.

Go Gophers!
I’ll be at the Northwestern game (homecoming) and also the Michigan game. I still can’t believe how much they’ve improved since just last year.
Go Gophers!
I had high hopes for Brewster and didn’t get on his case after the terrible finish last year, but even I didn’t think the team would (could) improve so much after going 1-11.
I’ll be at the Michigan game. Really not looking forward to that.
@Erica – I’d like to say something snarky about getting back the Little Brown Jug, really I would, but that has bit me in the ass too many times.
Go Gophers!
I didn’t grow up a fan but became a fan of mostly all things Minnesota when I moved up there back in 2001 and even though I don’t live in the area (though soon to return?), I’ve kept the faith on behalf of all the teams. It’s kind of nice to see the Gophers winning well into the conference season. :) It’s easy to not take the team as seriously early in the season if one considers the opponents.
I did grow up in Big Ten country and have an unspoken allegiance to a different school which is actually across the river from where I was reared. (Sorry for the TMI!) :D
Jarrin – Are you a secret Hawkeye?
I totally agree about early season games. It’s the conference games that matter.

No one wants to talk Vikes? I mean, come on, 4 games with out the heart of our D line? Maybe it’s a good thing Bball is starting.
I am making no presumptions either way about the Battle for the Little Brown Jug. I’m trying to stay as indifferent as possible.
I’m just glad I get to go and see my team play because it’s next to impossible to get in a game at Michigan Stadium (and that requires me to go to Ann Arbor). Never hard to get a ticket to a Gopher game.
If by bball you mean the Timberwolves… don’t get too excited.
Hockey? What?
If by bball you mean the Timberwolves… don’t get too excited
Come on Erica, Big Al!
Not to mention we are a young team and have 4 first round picks next year while the rest of the West is getting old; the Wolves star is rising.
Greg – Well, we have a great goalie, the best record, and one scoring line. It’s a fragile awesome.
Yes, David! You caught me! (I’ll have to revisit my profile info…) haha Yes, I was born and raised in Illinois and was a fan of Lute Olsen and Hayden Fry before I really understood much about sports. I promise though… you’d be proud of all the fan gear/wear I’ve accumulated since 2001. :)
Jarrin – I always secretly like the big passing offense of the Hawkeyes and I’ve only recently become a Gopher fan too. My college was UMD, so I grew up a Bulldog.
The rodents are over rated, the win a Purdue was impressive because they always whoop us on thier turf in nearly any sport. The goofs havnt played anyone really, see what happens in the next 3 weeks!!
John – Yeah! Let the trash talking begin.
The goofs havnt played anyone really
Well they lost, but the Gophers did play The Ohio State.
Dave –
I’m actually a saluki from Southern Illinois (I ran track there in the early 90s) but yeah, I grew up loving black and gold. I hated maroon because it was the primary color for a rival high school. It took me awhile to get used to it at SIU. By the time I moved to Minneapolis many years later, I had NO problems adopting maroon.
Every school I’ve ever attended has had blue and some variation on yellow as its colors.
Our NDSU Bison had a very nice come from behind win against your Salukis (an egyptian dog) in Fargo a few weeks ago. You now have a very good coach in Dale Lennon who came from UND in Grand Forks. It was nice for us to beat him in fargo as UND used to be a big rival of ours. By the way, the Gophies are overrated in everything except maybe womens hockey.
Interesting stuff. I’m a Badger’s fan, but I admit the Gophers are looking pretty good this year.
I just published a post about buildings in the Twin Cities that could win a costume contest and it included the Metrodome:

Let me know if you have suggestions for other buildings I should add.
Go Gophers! That’s right, I’m rooting for the Gophers even though I am native Wisconsinite and mainly a Badger fan.
Hey, Blake, I appreciate your leaving us comments, but only doing it when you have your own link to pimp is kind of not cool. Just sayin’.
John –
My Salukis did lose to NDSU but I’m not sad because one of my former students — I taught at Hopkins HS for four years — plays for NDSU.
I actually got on to write that I think we jinxed the Gophs since they lost to Northwestern today. :(
