Putting lipstick on a pig?

In an news story turned odd from the Strib ”This Friday, lots of people from across Minneapolis are expected to attend a block club-style gathering in the Hawthorne neighborhood to talk about crime, homelessness, community and citizenship. ”

According to Terry Collins of the Star Tribune Dyna Sluyter, a North Minneapolis resident, has “Flip flopped” on a party to show support for the Hawthorne Neighborhood.

Fret not, the party is still going to happen and is being called the “Dyna-mite Party” despite these words by Dyna Sluyter

I don’t believe I invited y’all to have a picnic in my yard, which happens to be your preferred location,” she said in a recent post. She threatened to leave the area for her outstate retreat.

“So, if your group of do-gooders want to come ’slumming’ up here and put some lipstick on the pig that is North Minneapolis crime, please wait for an invitation instead of imposing yourselves,”

I guess not everyone wants to be Johnny Northside.

Ofcourse, if you really want to try and put some lipstick on a pig there are other options.

Are these a bunch of do gooders gone awry?

Terry Collins’ tone bothered me. Kind of snarky.

Having not read the Mpls Issues Forum in a few weeks, I can’t make a judgment on the exact nature of the invitation and whether any real flip-flopping occurred, but I don’t see how having a block party in a park can be a bad thing.

I too hear Collins as snarky in her piece. I’ve been following along and wouldn’t characterize it as a flip-flop.

Collins is pulling a long, long ongoing discussion out of context to make fun of people in my opinion. The block party thing is one incident in a conversation that spans at least a year. This seems like a cheap way to get some attention on Collins part. Let’s troll the issues group for news.

No links to the forum either. Find Mpls Issues over here. I’ll let you search for the discussion mentioned.

No link here either and you’ve taken it even farther out of context. I hope you will at least go to the party (join Terry?) and report back.

Erica - Agreed on the tone. Though, I do think that snark was coming from all sides.

Pfhyper - In the comments of the Strib Jim Graham takes responsibility for the party, so I don’t think anyone flip flopped. As I said to Erica, I think it’s interesting how both sides are using a fair share of snark.

I’d really like to see what happens, but unfortunately I won’t be able to attend the party. I have prior commitments that are out of town.

    Thanks for the insight, Peter.

David, I can’t believe you braved the Strib comments. I don’t know if that’s brave or just insane.

Even if Collins’ treatment of this story is poor, I think it still says a lot that the Mpls Issues Forum is a place people go to find out what’s happening in the city.
