Will No One Think of Poor MnDOT?
The StarTribune reports Torn-up roads northeast of I-35W bridge have commuters up in arms.
Rather than quote MnDOT I’ll paraphrase in a most unkind manner; MnDot “We really need to screw you over majorly this year so we can divert traffic from next year’s screwing to your route, thus screwing you and them both all over again. It’s what we do. Mwaahahahaaaa mwaahahahaaaaa haaaa Ha Ha!”
So this is the second year that highway 36 has been closed or messed with and next year will make it three years in a row when they divert the 4 lanes of traffic from 94.
I do like the condescending quote from MnDOT spokesman Kent Barnard “I sit in the same traffic. I don’t drive a helicopter to work.”
I will now return to playing my tiny MnDOT sympathy fiddle in the key of D Minor which I find it to be the most sad of keys.
Can poor MnDOT ever get a break? What do you think?

Can MnDOT ever get a break? Probably not ever.
Transit lovers will never be happy. Car lovers will never be happy. We’ll never have enough money in the budget. Our weather is so extreme it mucks up the roads and other infrastructure.
I agree, but to me it seems that further congesting an already over burdened system is a sign of MnDOT really only being concerned with spending their budget.
With the 35 bridge issue this really isn’t a good year to be messing up the route where you are redirecting all of that traffic.
For the record, so far these new changes have actually made my commute better. I still don’t agree with them.
It’s a bad idea to bring Highway 280 down to one lane. Since it is the detour for 35W, there is no alternative route. It seems like they could have waited until after the new bridge was up. While 280 is in bad condition, most regular travelers will agree that two lanes are better than one at this point in time.
I agree, but to me it seems that further congesting an already over burdened system is a sign of MnDOT really only being concerned with spending their budget.

You can’t possibly be serious? Are you saying MnDOT has too much money, because it’s about to get a hunka-hunka billions more over the next 10 years. Or are you saying MnDOT should just do less and let hundreds of millions of dollars every year sit in a bank account while congestion worsens and roads deteriorate? In that case let’s just keep the billions of dollars we’re about to fork over and just call it good. Lord knows we could all use a little more $$ in our pockets. MnDOT used to not spend it’s budget, carrying over hundreds of millions of dollars from year to year until people realized that is a stupid way to build roads.
MnDOT can never win. When roads suck people complain, people complain about construction. And ftr, MnDOT does not do transit, Met Council does transit.
MnDOT can never win
Are you saying that MnDot is a giant failure of an organization will continue to be so?
Or are you saying that MnDOT really doesn’t give a crap about anything besides playing politics and their coffers?
And ftr, MnDOT does not do transit, Met Council does transit.
Okay, but a lot of times it’s either/or when it comes to funding.
I don’t know where you came up with that. People will never be happy with their roads and never fail to be unhappy with the inconveniences of them being built/fixed.
I’ve driven in it a few times… the worst part for me is the near blind-side from 280 when you realize that because you’re in the right lane, you’re getting sucked onto 36. There’s not nearly enough warning for this (and with the monster congestion, it’s almost impossible to safely merge into the left lane).
Makes me want to ride the bus more.
