We ended up going to Rudolph’s because it was close, and they had good Happy Hour appetizer prices, which was enough food to feed us for dinner.

As far as Southern cooking goes, it’s not really soul food or barbecue that I was necessarily looking for. You know, I think Southern is probably the wrong adjective to use to describe it. Country-style cooking is better.

Don't forget Popeye's down on Lake if you want Chicken & Biscuits. I'll third the recommendation for Ted Cook's if you like sloppy wet bbq. They do, on occasion go a mite heavy on the sauce. If you like dry, texas-style bbq, you've got to make the hike to Eden Prairie to Baker's Ribs. If you're looking for Soul Food, rather than bbq, Southtown is highly recommended, but I've never been there. I used to go to a place up on Broadway which I'm pretty sure is closed now.

Ted Cook’s 19th Hole BBQ on 38th Street 1 block from Hiawatha in Minneapolis has Thee Shit. Best BBQ ribs, chicken, jo-jo potatoes, greens, cornbread and sweet potato pie this side of the Mason-Dixon. Or whatever. Don’t play around. The last time I was there, this dude was telling me he took a taxi, 2 buses, and the train to get there. No eating in, it’s all takeout.

What’s that place on 38th St? Ted’s? Ted Cooks? Something like that. Just west of Hiawatha. I think it’s more "soul food" than Southern, but there’s a lot of overlap there. Can’t find a website for it.

Popeye's. :) Scott Ja Mama's for BBQ, but it's mainly takeout. My wife is from KC, and we've yet to find great BBQ in this town, but this place is the closest.

Hmm, Dixies has okra as an appetizer, but not a side dish, and Brasa doesn’t have okra at all on the menu. I feel like I should open a restaurant.

I asked on Twitter. Best suggestion I've gotten so far is Brasa. Alexis says "Brasa is half-southern-themed-with-a-conscience (local, organic, etc.). I like the cheddar grits and collard greens."

Those are probably the most popular ones. I’d go with Dixie’s probably. Have fun! Good to go with a theme for the night. :)
