More Garrison Keillor Silliness

What’s the first thing you notice when you read this column by Garrison Keillor?

If you’re anything like me, the first thing you notice is that it’s in the effing Chicago Tribune. This makes total sense because A) Garrison Keillor is from or has anything to do with Chicago, B) Northwest is based in or has anything to do with Chicago, C) Delta is based in or has anything to do with Chicago, D) the Tribune Company (who syndicated the article and owns the paper) is based in or has anything to do with Minnesota.

My guess is that his head is too big to tuck this in the opinion section of a Twin Cities market paper, but his prestige is too small to get it into an actual national paper.

Otherwise it’s pretty standard Keillor fare, for better or worse.

Keillor is in the Chicago Tribune because he has a contract with Tribune Media Services, one of the largest newspaper syndication service in the United States. (Both the Chicago Tribune and Tribune Media Services are owned by the Tribune Company.)

So just like how George F. Will, for example, writes for the Washington Post, he will show up in the Star Tribune because they subscribe to the The Washington Post Writers Group

So in summary, Keillor didn’t write for the Chicago Tribune but rather a syndicated column that any newspaper (including local Minnesota papers) could have picked up had they chosen to do so.

Why anyone would care what Garrison Keillor has to say about the airline industry, or anything else for that matter, is beyond me.

Oh, and the Chicago Tribune is an "actual national paper" unlike the fishwrap that you can get in the Twin Cities.

Telling, I suppose, that neither of our local dailies picked it up then.

These points are well taken, and I did figure it was syndicated. Erica’s point is more to the heart of the matter: he goes on and on about how prideful he is/was to have this airline in Minnesota, so you’d think he’d make more of an effort to let his fellow Minnesotans in on the sentiment.

This column actually appeared online earlier in the week on Salon.com, where Keillor contributes a bi-monthly column.

Yes, you can’t blame him for not appearing in the pages of the hometown papers. It’s their decision (Strib or PiPress) what syndicated material they carry and neither, apparently, subscribes to the Tribune syndicate. Blame them, not Keillor, for not printing his column … although I would not be surprised if it appears sometime this weekend. (It’s happened before.)

he goes on and on about how prideful he is/was to have this airline in Minnesota, so you’d think he’d make more of an effort to let his fellow Minnesotans in on the sentiment.

Not his fault; not his problem. He can’t just waltz into the Strib and PiPress and DEMAND to be printed, can he? I subscribe to Salon so read his column days before it’s reproduced in soy ink.

And you would want to regularly read his column because… why?

And you would want to regularly read his column because… why?

Uh … why not? I find Keillor to be a literate, informed columnist. But his column is not the only, or even primary, reason why I subscribe to Salon.
