Krispy Kreme leaves "hole" in MN
I heard a news story on KTLK-FM this morning about the last Krispy Kreme store serving its last donut yesterday before the chain packed up and left Minnesota.
Both WCC and KARE have stories.
Will you miss the chain? Did you wait in line when they opened 6 years ago?

Also some Krispy Kreme good-riddance chatter on MNspeak.
All I really remember is that when it first opened, cops in Maple Grove were directing traffic around it on weekends. Folks all backed up on 94 and whatnot. I had no idea what the hype was all about until I bought one from that MG store. Had never even heard of a yeast donut before.
Mmmmmmm.
Drat! I checked MNSpeak before I posted and didn’t see it. Thanks Aaron.
I didn’t line up for them, but I will miss them. When the one in Eden Prairie closed, there was some thought that the school district’s recently implemented "healthy snack" policy might have taken a toll. It used to be that parents bringing treats in for birthdays were regulars at the Krispy Kreme counter, but once the schools mandated healthier treats, donuts were forbidden. In a district as big as this one, that might have played a role, at least in the K-6 grades.
Krispy Kreme made frequent appearances at my workplace in EP as well. Seems folks like to stop for baked goods on the way in (a number of folks pass by bakeries in Chaska and Waconia on their way in as well).
My son wanted Krispy Kremes for school on Monday and we had to settle for store bought because they closed down on Friday. Had I known that we would have gone by there Friday to pick some up. I did send a letter to Krispy Kreme and if others do the same before they sell the building maybe they can reopen the store. It’s worth a try! I love those bad for you doughnuts!!!!
I went up to that Maple Grove store a couple of times with friends when it first opened. It was fun, but it really wasn’t about the doughnuts so much as it was something to go do with the under-21 friends. It almost had a little bit of the flavor of cruising University Avenue in the summer when it first opened, but that went away pretty quick.
Doughnut chains just don’t do that well in MN; I remember when Tim Horton’s tried to open up – and they had some decent food beyond doughnuts – but I don’t think they lasted more than 2 or 3 years at the most.
Huh… I had no idea they were all closing/closed now. Guess I’m way out of the loop. Mind, I haven’t had one since the downtown Target stopped carrying them, and that was quite a while ago.
Minneapolisyncrasy has some tasty alternative suggestions. I still need to stop by Mel-O-Glaze.
Mel-O-Glaze was my favorite all along. I’ve never bought a Krispy Kreme donut.
I like the closing comment on that one. "Good riddance, Krispy Kreme, and don’t let the door hit your keister on the way out!"
Thanks Dave and Erica for mentioning my little site. I can speak VERY highly of Mel-O-Glaze, which still has its collection of unusually colored flocked evergreens lining the outside of the building for all to enjoy.
I’m not a freak about "everything must be local" (I shop at chains and spend my money wherever, just like most others), but supporting neighborhood providers is good for everyone in the community.
As for Krispy Kreme, I loved the first one I had, but each successive doughnut was less satisfying than the last. I believe I ate my last Krispy Kreme doughnut about a year ago, but my consumption had fallen to about one per month prior to that. Turns out that for me, Krispy Kreme desire isn’t really sustainable. Guess I’m not the only one.
My god, I need to get down to Mel-O-Glaze; that sounds delicious.

So… it’s like opposite-crack?
KK Donuts – like opposite-crack. Funny stuff. But that seems to be the story here. It’s a fad for those of us in Minnesota and like many fads, the luster evaporated. That said, if anyone can tell me where to buy a well-made chocolate iced donut with creme filling, I’d like to hear from you. Just know that no bakery is going to sustain itself off my one-per-year donut habit.
