Minnesotan Wins DQ’s Cakeolympics
It may be 6 degrees right now, but I’ve got a hankering for some ice cream.
Every year Dairy Queen, the Bloomington, Mn-based ice cream and more chain, hosts an international “Iron Tip” cake-decorating competition at the DQ Pride 2008 Expo.
DQ ice cream cakes are my all-time favorite, but evidently those delicious cakes don’t decorate themselves. More than 400 decorators go head-to-head each year to battle for the championship.
The finals tested decorating speed, executing a competitor’s design choice and wielding a frosting tip on an on-the-spot design. It’s like the Cakeolympics.
Their company Web site’s news room hasn’t been updated since June 2007, but the PiPress has a nice feature on Cathy Spandel from an Apple Valley DQ who “creamed” the international competition to take home the gold.
Minnesota cake decorators represent!
According to the PiPress, “Spandel won a $1,000 prize, a first-prize gold medal and a charm bracelet.” No word if the bracelet is already covered in sticky goo.

I haven’t yet been able to figure out why, but that word "cakeolympics" really resonates with me….
It’s way better than "Iron Tip," if you ask me.
Wow - you really took the bait on that PR stunt. I’ll take a peanut buster parfait any day over the cake…
I have yet to try this pumpkin pie Blizzard everyone talks about. Maybe I should set myself a reminder now for November.
@whatsername actually saw a flyer at my local DQ and dug a little deeper. You and your PB Parfait crowd are so judgmental! :)
Yes, we are. :-)
