Twin Cities snubbed by Esquire’s Best Sandwiches in U.S.
Yesterday, Esquire Magazine published a story on “The Best Sandwiches in America.”
Admittedly incomplete, the list features Midwest ‘wiches from Chicago, Ann Arbor and Cleveland but completely snubbed Minneapolis Saint Paul.
Screw Esquire and their list, anyway. Where’s your favorite sandwich?
As far as deli sammiches go, Be’wiched in the warehouse district is pretty great. Downtown Saint Paul has two Blink Bonnie locations for my favorite #12 - The Edinburgh. For BBQ, I have to go for Baker’s Ribs pulled pork sandwich (yes a chain, but locally owned, okay?). Esquire ruled out burgers, but since that’s my favorite kind of sandwich, I would have to vote for a Jucy Lucy from Matt’s.
And you?

i think every food reporter’s lede in describing the opening of be’wiched was something like "in a city with no good sandwich places, be’wiched has come to save the day"
cause it’s true! we have not ONE single good deli! be’wiched shouldn’t even count — too fancy/pricey. chicago’s got a good deli on every corner, and we’re still waiting for just one to open up.
(i’ve never had that brothers deli in the skyway, though … i hear that’s good stuff.)
Does the Chili Dog from The Bulldog in NorthEast count as a sandwich?
Totally forgot my old stand-by Blink Bonnie from when I lived/worked in downtown St. Paul. Updated post to include.
How sad is it that Chick-fil-A is the best chicken sandwich in the country? I think that says something about the utility and taste of chicken between two pieces of bread.
I think what’s sadder, is that I can’t think of a good sandwich in this town.
Oh, wait, the pork sandwich at Jasmine Deli, thank you very much.
Minneapolis Saint Paul
I applaud your use of the approved branding.
Submarino at Marino’s Deli in NE Minneapolis.
"Oh, wait, the pork sandwich at Jasmine Deli, thank you very much."
i am addicted to these.
we need an american deli, however.
The Special Sandwich (Bahn Mi) at Saigon in St. Paul might be the best sandwich in town. Also, the Cubano at Manny’s Tortas and the Falafel at Holy Land Deli. We have many good sandwiches, but none of them American.
Two words: Manny’s Tortas.
ditto the Cubano at Manny’s, or anything at Cecil’s in Highland Park.
I’m partial to the "Kevin Garnett" at Pastrami Jacks although I wouldn’t associate it with a MN wich in any way.
NY all the way.
Yes, someone beat me to Cecil’s, but that place stands up to most I have been to in other places. Good smell, good wood panelling, good counter staff, great sandwiches. Russian Ruben anyone?
Not a sandwich joint, but the Good Day Cafe in St Louis Park has a pretty damn good fried egg sandwich (ham, tomato, 2 eggs over easy, avocado).
Manny’s Tortas.
Caffrey’s Deli.
Me three! I also vote for Cecil’s!! My usual order there consists of an egg bagel, cream cheese and (very) lean corned beef. God, I think I need to go get one right now…
You can get a decent corned beef at Brothers and a good chopped liver at Fishman’s, but it’s pretty damn hard to compete with Brooklyn. I dig Be’wiched (particularly its uber-tender roast beef) and think it deserves consideration, but, seriously, the place just opened — somewhat hard to fault Esquire for not being up on all new places in all US cities. As for price, money is no object when the sandwich is great. That, and Be’wiched sandwiches are two meals’ worth of food.
But re: Manny’s tortas — I think if Esquire had tried ‘em, they would’ve and should’ve made the cut.
