Living the Car-Free Life in the TC

While our public transportation is not on par with Chicago, D.C., NYC, or the Bay Area, if you happen to live and work within the boundaries of Minneapolis and/or St Paul, it’s plenty possible to go about your life without a car. Several local bloggers are writing all about their experiences.

Hubert Zork at Carfree in Minneapolis has been carfree for a long time. He makes a great point regarding bus, rail, and weather in light of this weekend’s snowfall.

The folks at Car Free Family Weblog went car free earlier this year after an accident totaled their one remaining vehicle. I particularly enjoy reading about their learning curve.

Finally, as Leif Petterson is rediscovering his homeland, he’s realizing what a boon LRT is to the carfree downtown dweller and delves into why “carfree” is a more appropriate word choice than “carless.”

Anybody else doing it carfree? Or at the least actively trying to reduce your car usage? The car payments and insurance alone make it worth a try. Seems the greatest opportunity is for the DINKs to go from two cars to one. Not to mention the health benefits of biking (because you can’t walk everywhere or bus on-demand).
