“Camping Out”

Seen in the TC flickr pool.

“It was 6:56 pm Thanksgiving Day and people were already lined up on two sides of the building. The store doesn’t open until 5:00 am and the temperature is predicted to drop to twenty-three degrees f.”

Y’all are some crazy motherfuckers. I’m sure somebody out there is super proud of themselves. So give us your tales of Black Friday. I want to hear about the frostbite and the tugging matches. The wee hours and the awesome deals.

I went to the Eden Prairie Target at 8:30 pm and it was pretty quiet. That’s all I’ve got.

We went to a Target at 9am, and it was busy but not insane. We got the $80 digital camera in the ad (they had plenty).

Then we went to Kohl’s to buy the $50 portable DVD player. We got one. But the line was stretched around the store — people were saying it lasted more than an hour. I do not care that much about a deal, and we moved along.

What are people buying at Best Buy that it’s worth lining up at 1am for? The Sony laptop was a good deal, but then again, you have to run Windows, and so you couldn’t pay me for that.

That picture kind of puts the Fear into me. No wonder the rest of the world is scared shitless of us. Look at our priorities.

I was in the downtown Target at 3.30pm on Friday and it was only a hair busier than any normal day. Maybe downtown retail is dead after all. I blame the governor.

The night before (Thanksgiving night) I shopped online from my living room. There were no lines, it was 75 degrees, I was on the couch, the Sopranos Season 5 was on in the background and I had a Strongbow nearby. It took over 20 minutes though, because I had to go to two web sites and the check out guy was a 16 year old holiday temp who couldn’t make the receipt printer work.

We went to a Circuit City around 4:30 AM… there were people lined up more than halfway around the entire building. Sadly, the biggest reason we went there (500G hard drive for $80) was sold out in minutes.

Afterwards, we decided against hitting another suburban store, so headed to the Target in downtown Minneapolis. It was SO quiet, only a few people milling around. They were also sold out of the item we went down there for, but I scored a few movies for $5.

Were a few movies worth getting up at 4 AM for? Hells no.

I went to four different Minneapolis public libraries, using my bicycle and public transportation.
