a note to Edina: how cultured (and perhaps silly) of you.

I found myself at a family brunch at the Galleria this weekend, and was sort-of surprised to see the road between the Galleria and SuperTarget all torn up. I guess I don’t remember it being in bad shape, so I was a little surprised.

Then I saw what was really going on. The city of Edina is installing roundabouts. On a side street.

I am perplexed. Having been to both England and Ireland, I can understand both the concept and functionality of roundabouts as points of entry and exit on major thoroughfares. In fact, I think they are a good idea.

But I don’t think the midwestern mall-going crowd is going to do as well with them. No matter how cultured and European the roundabouts make the street look (it’s maybe 70th?), it made traffic a disaster. At 11:45 on a Sunday morning. With half the road closed. I was almost sideswiped by not one , but 2 giant SUVs with very confused-looking drivers.

Ah well. I’m not down in that neighborhood very often, anyhow.

They put one in on 66th and Cedar in Richfield as well. It’s right at the entrance to the new Super Target and Home Depot.

I love the roundabout near the Minnehaha Falls, since it’s a low speed zone anyway, but I just don’t see how these big suburban intersections can handle it. Guess time will tell.

I think they make sense in places where there’s through traffic, but not at all right outside a shopping center.

There’s a ridiculous roundabout in the already obnoxious Woodbury Lakes shopping center.

I don’t know if you noticed it, but in the former parking lot of the Galleria they are building condos that will someday join right up with the shopping center. For those times when you just “need” a new bauble, I guess? Damn, I hate the suburbs.

    That sounds horrible.

I’m not so sure that putting roundabouts there is such a bad idea. The intent is to remove the need for the stop lights. I’d also rather have the good citizens of Edina (and visitors from elsewhere) get some practice using a roundabout on a relatively busy secondary street than first putting these things in place at a major intersection.

After seeing countless stoplights that are badly timed, I welcome our new roundabout overlords. We will have the usual media hype of some dumb soccer moms in SUVs getting accidents, but that will subside. Many traffic lights make you wait at a red for a long time, even though there’s no cross traffic at all. This will get us around(about) that.

I’m going to get a new car out of one of those roundabouts one of these days. Sometimes I like to go ’round again, just to see if someone will hit me.
