Ian who? I want to see the Doctor!
King Lear starts tonight at the Guthrie, but don’t attempt to order tickets online. All the performances sold out to season ticket holders who got first dibs on the tickets. That’s right, there were no tickets sold to the general public. It kinds of irks me, even though I know enough season ticket holders that I could’ve gotten a ticket. Since the Guthrie gets some public funding, personally, I think they should be required to put up a percentage of tickets to any show to the general public. Granted, with these tickets being between 50 and 90 dollars a seat, it doesn’t really make it any easier for a low-income family to see a performance, but it’s a start. As it stands with this show, you could only get a ticket if you were willing to invest in season tickets. Or buy a ticket being scalped on ebay or craigslist for several hundred dollars. There is a third option, if you have nothing better to do during the day.
No rush tickets will be sold for the show, however you can get in line for full priced cancellation tickets the day of any of the given performances, sold on a first come, first served basis. The Guthrie link above has a clip of McKellan as Lear and Sylvester McCoy (Doctor Who 1986-89) as the Fool (I’d rather see McCoy than McKellan, myself).

I agree that they should keep some tickets set aside for the genreal public. I actually considered becoming a subscriber just to get my hands on some Lear tickets, but can’t even afford the student price. I called the day that they went on sale to the public and got the message that season ticket holders had them all.
So what did I do? I went down to the Guthrie at 1 p.m. this last Sunday and waited nearly 3 hours. I was lucky, some people had been there since 9 a.m. waiting. Some people don’t have the luxury of driving down and waiting in line. I wish the Guthrie could make itself a bit more accessible when productions like this come along, but at least we’re one of only three US cities that get to try to see the show.
