Hard to Choose a High School

I didn’t grow up here, nor do I have kids, so I know nothing of the intricacies of the public school system. I was just commenting yesterday that it feels weird to not know what all the schools in the city are, much less in the rest of the metro. Made me realized how ingrained that sort of knowledge becomes when you’re immersed in it. It’s completely off my radar.

So I’m intrigued by the school choice option. Adds an interesting twist to selecting a neighborhood to live in when you can theoretically send your kids anywhere anyway. Or maybe it removes the twist.

And some of the specialty programs the high schools in Minneapolis and St Paul offer, like International Baccalaureate, were completely foreign to me. Sounds like something I would have done had it been available to me when I was going into high school. I didn’t realize just how popular, competitive, and complicated these programs really are.

I thought it was stressful enough picking a college. I can’t imagine going through it at the age of 12.

I’m in almost the same boat, as we will be looking into middle school options soon. We are coming from southern MN and have never had a choice in where we sent our kids. I have been researching the St. Paul schools, but we will have to visit a few before we can make any decisions.

We are currently renting until we sell our home in the south, and so have not settled on a neighborhood yet.
