35W Bridge: Link Roundup #2
I’m dumping the items that have caught my eye. I’d definitely recommend checking your favorite news outlet for the latest info (I recommend MPR or Channel 4000 (back online, just for bridge collapse coverage)).
(In chunks of 5 because it’s easier to read that way.)
- The confirmed deceased and those still missing.
- Temporary lanes will be added to I-94 to accommodate the extra traffic. Construction next weekend. Same goes for Hwy 280. Construction this weekend.
- Andy Blair’s account of his experience. He passed under the bridge right before the collapse and helped on the scene. Definitely see his pictures.
- Jason DeRusha tells where the best places to view the area are, and recommends opening the 10th Ave bridge to pedestrians for viewing.
- Anne Nicolai’s account of her near miss. She watched it happen in front of her, but was able to turn around and get back off the highway.
- MnDOT’s I-35W Bridge page. Traffic and detour info, documentation/inspection info, fact sheet, design/rebuild info, and the traffic cam video. “6:05 p.m., Aug. 1, shows an edited two-minute clip from a traffic camera at the south end of the bridge. Initially, the camera is pointed to the south away from the bridge. When traffic comes to a stop, the camera pans to the north where the bridge has just collapsed.”
- The guy that helped the kids off the school bus turned down a photo op with President Bush. (I would, too. Seriously. I’m not just saying that.)
- Arclightzero on the global warming connection.
- Garrett Ebling’s story at CaringBridge.
- Rob Dubinski on the possible implications of the heavy media coverage.
- http://9340.blogspot.com (The I-35W Bridge over the Mississippi River was known as bridge #9340.)
- Minnesota Lynx players wore commemorative patches on their shoes for last Thursday’s home game.
- Adam Platt from MSP Mag: “Bridges or Schools or Stadia?”
- Roadguy readers discuss how artistic (or not) the replacement bridge should be.
- The place to leave memorials is Gold Medal Park.
- Wilde Roast says after 911 retail dropped 45% and their business dropped over 50%, so please consider swinging by. Same goes for all the businesses in the area, especially 7 Corners. You know, like Lake Street construction.
- twin city sidewalks put together “a ‘best of’ compilation of the Star Tribune’s Lexis-Nexis results about our governor and the state’s transportation budget…. (Remember, I’m not blaming. “I’m just saying…”)”
- Freakish coincidence: this piece on emergency response training was printed in the issue of neighborhood paper The Bridge published just prior to the collapse.
- Edge of Sports on the culture of Minnesota and how the stadium debate looks now (via QWOC).
