TCF Stadium Construction

The Bridge reports that as of Monday, July 2nd, the piece of Huron between University and 4th is officially lost and gone forever (as well as three parking lots). Further details can be found at the U’s Parking and Transportation Services stadium update site. Anybody that goes through there at all already knows what a clusterfuck that is, but there’s one more detail for you.

What I didn’t know was that they’re now calling this little piece of town the East Gateway District. That same P&TS site says that “[t]he advent of the TCF Stadium and new research buildings will soon create a bustling, exhilarating destination on campus.”

So the East Gateway includes the new stadium and some research buildings, but not all the other sports facilities. Or not just the research buildings? It seems like an arbitrary designation. The only thing in common is that all those buildings are new and they’re all on the east end of that section of campus.

Also, I fail to see what’s bustling and exhilarating about research buildings. That’s not to say that some fucking awesome stuff doesn’t happen inside them, but… they’re not inherently bustling or exhilarating. But that’s just me.
