It does a movielover’s heart good
I went to the midnight screening of Arsenic and Old Lace at the Uptown Theater on Saturday night, part of their regular midnight offerings each Saturday night. The movies on schedule for the Saturday night viewings are a mixed bag, some old, some new, ranging from The Goonies to 3-D porn. What was kind of remarkable about their screening of this classic Frank Capra/Cary Grant screwball comedy was the audience. I had initially asked my friend Mike to come with me to see it, but he said he’d rather not pay 8.50 for a movie from 1944. I thought his feelings would be pretty common and I’d be one of the only people in the theater. I couldn’t have been more wrong. There weren’t lines around the block like I’ve seen for screenings of The Goonies or The Neverending Story, but there were over a hundred people in the theater and most of them in their 20s and early 30s, maybe even a couple in their teens. All of whom decided they’d rather see this classic film in a classic theater.
Now all we need is a new full-time repertory moviehouse. Any takers?

I agree! I was surprised with as much cultural the Twin Cities claim to have that they do not have more older movies shows. I adore the movies in Loring Park in the summer but they always have a certain theme. But it could just be me also… Give me ‘Bringing up Baby’ over ‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure’ anyway.
