Woof.

Loring Park’s Leash-Free Dog Park opens today.

I am (temporarily) without canine companion, but this is super-excting to me, as a) I’ll have a dog again someday and b) I think the offleash parks are one of the better ideas the Minneapolis parks have done. I loved taking my bassett hound to the leash-free park near lake of the isles.

However… get a license if you take your dog. The fine for not having one is steep (I had a friend who got busted a few years back.

I also know there’s an offleash park near Columbia golf course… anyone else have an offleash favorite?

    My girlfriend says:

“I agree that the off-leash dog parks are great. My boys love the chance to interact with dogs on their own terms. I love not having to do the owners-tangled-in-the-leash dance that can occur on “regular” walks. There is a great dog park that goes down to the river by where Hiawatha and 55 intersect. Haven’t been there for a while so I can’t really speak to its current condition.”

The one that Erica is talking about is my favorite one. It’s huge and runs right along Minnehaha so the dogs can swim all day long in the summer. It’s really well maintained and instead of just one big field there are paths all over.

I think the hands-down best one (not that I’ve been to any others…) is the airport dog park, off of Hwy. 62 and 28th? Avenue, if only because it’s run by the airport and not any city, so you don’t have to worry about having a license in that town. (The fee for out-of-city licenses is ridiculously expensive at every dog park I’ve researched.) It’s also reported to be the largest dog park in the area, and it’s always full of fun doggies to play with.
