Gaming Reviews in the City Pages

Can someone explain to me how Gaming merits its own section in the City Pages? Actually, it doesn’t quite. You can find the articles easily enough, but Gaming doesn’t rate a link in the header. It falls under “Arts” apparently.

I know gaming is a whole big thing. I am completely out of that loop (and completely fine with being out of that loop). I suppose it’s not any different from movie and DVD reviews, but it just doesn’t seem like a fit for the City Pages.

Just because something isn’t part of your lifestyle, it doesn’t fit seem to fit in with the paper? How is this any different than reviews on sports or country music? Not everybody wants to read endless crap about the twins or read a blog about alt-country music.

You may find the reasons behind having gaming include at http://www.theesa.com/facts/gamer_data.php

There’s plenty of other stuff in the CP that’s not part of my lifestyle. Like alt-country music.

Sports teams are local. Bands are local or at least coming to town to play. Restaurants are local. Makes sense to cover those. Movie reviews? The latest CD release of any random band? Not so much.

It all begs the question of what City Pages is, exactly. I think of it as the local alt-weekly that talks about, I don’t know, local stuff. Maybe I’m wrong on that.

A lot of people are gamers. So? Would you go right to the City Pages for the latest game review? Maybe you would. Correct me if I’m wrong.

To clarify, I realize that CP doesn’t conform to my perception of what it is by nature of the fact that it does include some of those things that are not strictly locally-focused and the inclusion of the game reviews is just one more of those things.

Don’t get me wrong, I would never trust the City Pages for a game review. But, by your definition, you would have to take out reviews on movies that were not made locally, or reviews on music that wasn’t made locally.

Where do you draw the line?

The only thing that really confuses me, is the category. Arts? Really? I don’t think so. Sure, it takes lots of talented graphic artists to put a game together, but that’s a bit of a stretch. I think that if they’re going to do it, give it it’s own space.

I guess CP draws the line wherever the readership starts to drop off. I just skip those articles. Along with about 90% of what the City Pages has to offer.

And I understand that there’s something to be said for a mix of local stuff and broader appeal items. The strictly local niche gets filled by other publications like The Pulse.

Don’t tell me we have to get into the whole “is it art” argument all over again. Every damn time somebody creates a new medium…

And Erica, I’d argue that games have much more claim to “alt” entertainment than say, sports, which the City Pages puts on the cover at least once every couple months. Like comics (which we’ve already determined can be art, I hope) they’re a sort of outsider activity and fit in perfectly with the tenor of a good alternative magazine.

    I’ll buy that, Gus.

Whew. You avoided an all-out war with the gamers, Erica. That was a close one. You could’ve had a controller launched at your head!

I’m not fucking around with any Wii-wielders.
