Minnesota Meme
We got tagged by LocalMN Blog for a Minnesota-themed meme.
Requirements are simple, fill us in on three things about MN ….anything … what you love, what you hate, where you visit, where you party, where you blog from, just keep it Minne-sooo-tan.
First, the part of the meme in which we tag three more MN blogs to participate:
- Roadguy
- Steve Gross
- The Current (since we’re a group blog, we’ll toss it to another group blog)
Next, the part of the meme in which we give our answers. Feel free to play along in the comments.
Erica M:
- the bajillion parks
- the skyway
- the progressive atmosphere
- Grain Belt sign next to the Hennepin Ave bridge. It’s the first landmark/symbol I remember orienting myself around during childhood; I still drive past it and feel that contented “Ah, I’m home” feeling.
- Thriving local arts and music scene. We have great local artists, a population that supports independent arts and music
- Water. We have some of the best lakes to walk around, anywhere in the country. And biking over the stone arch bridge is one of the best things about the entire city. Not to mention, drive an hour in any direction May – September and hit a lake you can spend a weekend fishing, drinking beer, sunbathing, and relaxing at.
- Good food. I especially love that I can choose from a huge variety restaurants with dishes from all over the world, just a few steps from my apartment.
- An active online ’scene’. I spend a lot of time online, and love reading/listening to people from MN.
- Minneapolis in particular: Big city/small town feel. I know there are folks out there who’d disagree with me, but it’s so easy to meet lots of wonderful people.
- More arts than you can shake a stick at
- The incredible number of parks, crowned by the fact that there’s a waterfall in the middle of our largest metropolitan area
- Due to the cold winters, there are almost no poisonous cirtters
- Home of the first toaster, waterskis, Rollerblades and Spam.
- Home to the nation’s best rock night club, First Avenue
- Home to the nation’s first enclosed mall (Southdale)

Rockstars! The group participation is cool as can be. Thanks! Here are my favorites from your lists:

Many thanks for the tag. Here are three transportation-y things that Roadguy is more or less in love with:
– The views of the Minneapolis skyline from southbound 35W in Northeast.
– Riding the bus along the University of Minnesota transitway to the State Fair.
– The Twin Cities’ mind-bogglingly vast and beautiful array of off-street bike paths.
The views of the Minneapolis skyline from southbound 35W in Northeast.
This one gets me every time because I don’t very often go in that direction. It’s a whole new way of looking at the city. The view heading north into downtown on 35W is pretty cool, too.
I also really like the drive west on 94, winding through downtown St Paul, crossing the river, and then winding through downtown Minneapolis. Assuming the traffic doesn’t suck. It really struck me the first time I ever came here.
Roadguy very kindly posted his thoughts, too, and his readers chipped in with a bunch of transportation-y favorites.
