Gangbe Brass Band at Cedar

gbb.jpgThe sounds of West African Vodoun rhythms, military brass band, Afrobeat and New Orleans jazz is coming to the Cedar Cultural Center this Saturday, April 14.

It’s the Gangbe Brass Band, a 10-member Beninese musical ensemble founded in 1994, who blend traditional West African music with Western jazz and big band.

I have a copy of their last album, Whendo, and it matches multilingual vocal harmonies, mostly in-tune trumpet, trombone, tuba and sax with bustling drums, shakers and yes, cowbells. If you like quality brass arrangements, Paul Simon’s Rhythm of the Saints and have an interest in Afro-European music, this could be a concert for you.

Jack Brass Band, the Twin Cities’-based New Orleans-style brass band, will be performing some pre-show tunes out on the patio, and the GBB performance will be broadcast live on KFAI (90.3FM Minneapolis and 106.7FM Saint Paul).

That sounds pretty cool. I’m not sure I’ll make it to the live show, but I’ll definitely try and catch it on the radio.
