rain, rain, all the way from texas
Every once in a while, I get hooked by a local artist.
Of late, this hook has been Haley Bonar.
I saw Bonar for the first time at the Minnesota Music Awards way back in October, and was instantly charmed by her sweet vocals, her intensely humble yet compelling stage presence (Craig Finn of our dearly departed Lifter Puller and the equally darling if not quite as local the Hold Steady holds a similar charm, for me.), and the depth of songwriting.
Her most recent album, Lure the Fox, has garnered significant critical acclaim, including a #4 nod from the Strib at the end of the year, and accolades from both Pulse and City Pages.
And of course (though probably the very least impressive), my meager adoration.
Captain Captain, from Lure the Fox, was just featured on the Current’s Song of the Day, and it’s a lovely little number.
(If you like to try new music risk-free, by the way, I highly recommend the Current’s song of the day podcast. Good stuff.)
She’s playing a show May 31st at the Varsity. Go, listen, and fall in love.

Haley Bonar also does some fantastic vocals on the new Andrew Bird album that comes out tomorrow.
I first saw her at a thing… at the Fitzgerald. Something about women in music and curated by Leslie Ball (I *heart* Leslie Ball!). She was amazing.
