Good eats on 90/94

I want to get this next point off my chest while the rye bread is still fresh (see below).

Let’s say you’re like me, and you have to drive from the Twin Cities via 90/94 through Wisconsin every frickin’ month. If that’s the case, you’re probably used to stopping at Culver’s and sustaining yourself with a delicious Butterburger and maybe 2 or 3,000 calories worth of frozen custard. But sometimes the trip calls for a more snack-like pit stop.

Might I recommend the refrigerator case of most Wisconsin gas stations? Try the local honey ham sausage sticks, or fresh cheese curds, or Vern’s onion-flavored cheese-food spread on Rubschlager’s mini rye toasts. It’s like a Midwestern meze platter. The portions are small or large as you want them to be, the price is right, and the flavors are familiar yet distinctive. And because the meat and cheese is local, it’s actually pretty damn good.

    I can confirm and echo this suggestion. Plus, if you make it all the way to Milwaukee, don’t just satisfy yourself with Culvers. Get some custard, for God’s sake. Kopp’s is the best.

    I can’t wait until the downtown Mpls farmer’s market gets going (though I’ll have to, since I have about 2 months…) so I can get some super-yummy-fresh cheese curds… mmmm.

    As a native Wisconsinite, I shudder at the idea of the Minneapolis farmer’s market providing fresh cheese curds. There’s a Nelson Cheese Factory right by the state fairgrounds; get thee there, stat!

    Of course, the BEST fresh cheese curds are white, and they are from Westby. If you’re in THAT part of town, make sure you get a bag. Or two.
