From the Twin Cities Flickr Pool. Only twice in my life have I ever actually walked on a frozen lake. It totally freaks me out, and the idea of driving a vehicle onto a lake (especially with a whole bunch of other vehicles) is unfathomable. So this ice may be perfectly safe to walk on, but it sure doesn’t look like it to me. Every time I look at this picture, I imagine this woman is about to plunge to her icy death. And then there’s this comment:

In this case maybe there is no water underneath. Looks to me like shallow water, frozen all the way through. When the sun heats up a large surface of ice it expands (like all solids do when heated) and causes these cracks along the shore. Its exciting to be on the ice when these quakes occur.

That’s not helping me.
