Arrowhead 135-Mile Winter Ultramarathon

‘CCO calls it “a human-powered version of Alaska’s Iditarod.”

An event called the Arrowhead Winter Ultramarathon is sure to be a trying task under extreme conditions. I don’t know if anyone anticipated temperatures of 30° below, though. They’d expect cold, yes. But that cold? Doug at MnBicycleCommuter has been training for it, but the extreme cold and a bit of technical difficulty got him down.

I pulled out of the AH 135 about 6:30 pm yesterday. It was brutal conditions. Sure I’m sad I couldn’t finish the race, but I’m very happy with what I accomplished. I rode 54 miles in sub-zero conditions and had no problems staying warm (except when I stopped). I had problems all day with both disc brakes. I rode 20 or more miles with a brake pad dragging. I stayed well hydrated and ate often. Despite this I couldn’t keep the energy level up to continue. When I pulled out at 6:30 it was -14F and dropped to -22F by 8:30. Today I feel like I rode 150 miles yesterday. My entire body aches.

Check out his race report and congratulate him on his effort. ‘Cause lord knows I wouldn’t even think about attempting something like this.
