Police Presence in Uptown

I came home tonight and there were five cop cars outside the house kitty-corner from my building. I stood outside and watched for a minute, along with my neighbors who were upstairs in their window. When I pulled out the camera, the cops shined spotlights on me and asked over the loudspeaker, “Is there something interesting?” I nodded yes, and then they informed me that there are police cars all over the city. Yeah, but they’re not always right outside my door.

The pictures are awful, but you can see the spotlights shining my way.

I went inside, then came back out to walk over to Rainbow. On my way back, I stopped again and just watched. Now some cops are out of their cars and standing on the corner. A guy approached the house, and a cop asked him where he was going. Didn’t hear the rest of the exchange, but the guy walked away. I thought he looked like someone I had seen hanging out on the porch of that house (they do a lot in the summer), but it was hard to tell, it being dark and him being bundled up and all. He got on the phone, I assume talking to someone inside the house. He yelled out, “Are you serious?” Then he approached the house again. The cops let him go in, but through a different door than the one he was heading to the first time.

Then a car pulled up and someone in plain clothes got out. I couldn’t tell if it was some sort of police official or a reporter. He carried a clipboard and talked to several of the cops for a bit. I heard the word “footprint.” After a bit he got back in his car and drove away. Shortly after the cops had flashlights out and were looking at one set of stairs and the sidewalk around the house. All the while, the dog inside the house is barking like crazy.

As of midnight and there were still at least two cars out there, but they’d turned all the flashing lights off. My guess is there was a burglary or something, and the folks in that house called the cops. I guess I’ll see it in the news today. Or maybe in a couple weeks in the neighborhood crime report.

Video after the jump.

At least you get police officers in Uptown.

A week and a half ago I called as an individual was attempting to break the glass in the rear door of my apt complex at approx 11 pm to gain entry (and no it wasn’t a resident). I called while it was in progress as my apt is right above the door. Mind you I live in Longfellow. Not only do I like in Longfellow but it’s a whooping 4 large-ish blocks from my building to the 3rd precinct building. The cops never showed up, no report was filed etc. . .

So glad they respond to 911 calls for things like break-ins in progress.

There’s this from the city that breaks it down by precinct.

The Wedge tracks some stuff and includes some more specific information, but it’s not the most up-to-date.

Hotfooting robber’s route was writ in snowThe recent layers of fresh snow may be good news for outdoor enthusiasts, but not for the common criminal.By David Chanen, Star TribuneThe recent layers of fresh snow may be good news for outdoor enthusiasts, but not for the common criminal.A young man with a bandana covering his face burst in the back door of the Kinhdo restaurant in the Uptown area of Minneapolis on Wednesday evening, made his way to the front of the restaurant and demanded money from an employee at the register. With a gun in hand, the robber was given a bag of cash and fled.Unbeknownst to the robber, a witness followed him out. He pointed officers in the man’s direction, and they (police dog included) followed very distinct shoe prints in the snow. The fluffy clues led right to the crook’s front door, police said. The police surrounded the house and the 21-year-old suspect surrendered. After obtaining a search warrant, officers found the bandana, a pellet rifle and shoes with the tread pattern matching what they had seen in powdery snow.Gumshoe detective work at its finest.©2007 Star Tribune.
