Snice maze at the St. Paul Winter Carnival
The nation’s oldest and largest winter festival, the St. Paul Winter Carnival, announced some changes for its “Amazing Ice Maze” - it will be built of 90%snow and 10% ice (= snice)
With the recent warm spell, organizers want to be sure the typical 2,000 blocks of ice from Lake Phalen (aka TV photo op) won’t melt once they get the maze set up on Harriet Island, so they’re using man-made snow. Why is this news? I suppose I’m not sure. I always enjoy checking out the scultpures and festivities surrounding the carnival, and using Harriet Island this year is definitely going to feel differently than Rice Park.
This year’s carnival also includes a 150-foot-long snow slide, a giant Jimmy Buffett snow sculpture (parrotheads rejoice!) and the usual ice carvings. It’s a good time if you’ve never been - vulcans and all. The St. Paul Winter Carnival runs Jan. 26 through Feb. 4. Be sure to check out the parades, too.
Also, the Wells Fargo ice rink at Fifth and Market streets (adjacent to Landmark Center) will stick around until Feb. 4, allowing overlap with the St. Paul Winter Carnival. Rentals are $2 and it used to be that if you had a WF account, you could rent for free. Not sure if they’re continuing that this year.

I can’t decide if I love or hate the word “snice.”
I think we should stop talking about Minnesota Nice, and replace it with Minnesota Snice, which is a combination of snotty and nice. Or snide and nice. Because isn’t that how we really are? Or maybe that’s just me.
Amen to that, brotha.
Minnesota Snice. Love it. I want it on a t-shirt (to go with a Minnesota Not Nice t-shirt).
‘Snice to hear your suggestion, Jason.
It should be noted that snice is also a Taiwanese snow cone dessert using frozen shaved milk ice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snice). Wonder if that goes nicely with a hotdish and some jello salad?
That snow cone thing sounds kinda good.
That it does. Snow cones… I seem to remember a gas station near where I grew up (Chicago area) selling snow cones. You’d pump a couple shots of juice on the ice. Good stuff, but there was something odd about the mix of frozen ice and gasoline. Not that you pumped gasoline on the ice, but you know what I mean.
