Curbly is Very Pretty

Curbly LogoI first heard of Curbly on an episode of Future Tense. The NPR story was more about how two Minneapolitans, Bruno Bornsztein and Ben Moore, built a website/company in such short order using Ruby on Rails. Which is all fine and dandy. I’m not even sure what that means, exactly, aside from knowing that Ruby on Rails is some kind of programming juju. I think the website itself is far more interesting to most folks.

Curbly calls itself a DIY Design Community. It’s all about creative home projects on the cheap. Garrick van Buren, at MNteractive, describes it as “a Web 2.0-compliant Digg + MySpace + ReadyMade magazine.”

Curbly is not only a neat concept, it’s pretty to look at. People post photos and ask questions and everyone can respond with tips and advice and whatnot, and it’s got a slick and soothing interface to boot. I’m much more inclined to read about home projects than to actually do them, but the first time I visited Curbly I got sucked in and those three hours of my life are gone forever. If you’re more the hands-on type, Curbly will be home improvement crack.

According to Garrick, the sign up process is a little involved. But I, for one, appreciate the efforts of those who have joined, because I spent a good portion of those lost three hours clicking through a daisy chain of people from the TC.

Someone recently asked what exactly “curbly” means, and Bruno answers thusly:

There’s no “official” meaning for the word Curbly. It’s a take on the phrase “curb appeal”, and we think of it as being an adjective for describing a cool house, an awesome room, or an incredible design idea.

Usage:

“Wow, that house on the corner is curbly.”

“Hey, do you know a place where I can get a curbly picture frame for this Marimekko print?”

“You, your living room was a lot curblier before you covered the windows with tinted plastic wrap”

Plus, Curbly is fun to say. Curbly. Curbly!
