The New Lynx Coach

The Minnesota Lynx finally found a replacement for their head coach that resigned back in July. A former assistant coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves will step into the role of leading the WNBA’s second-worst team in the 2006 season.

Don Zierden, a big Flip Saunders understudy, was chosen to move from his current position of a talent scout for the Detroit Pistons to the position of head coach.

My favorite quote from the entire Star Tribune article?

Although Zierden never has coached women or in the WNBA, his sister Debbie has been a Lynx season-ticket holder from the team’s start in 1999.

Well, by God, I sat two rows behind a season ticket holder during the games I went to, so I should clearly be eligible for any assistant coaching job that might become available.

Heh. You’re welcome! Please consider me if you need an assistant, ball girl, player massager, whatever.

The press release sounds a lot better than the Strib article. Folks on the message boards seem to be pleased. (Would have rather had Michael Cooper, but hey.) Actually, they seem more pleased to have Teresa Edwards as an assistant.

They invited season ticket holders to the press conference and to a reception. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend either one, but here are some impressions from the reception.

Personally, I’m just glad we have a coach and now we can really focus on next spring’s draft.
