Minneapolis’ 1st Gift to the World: The Mall of America

This week, Metroblogging sites around the globe are unveiling seven gifts their cities can share with the world. Browse the numerous Metblogs, or check here to see what other cities are giving.

Let us know if you totally agree or totally disagree with the gifts we’ve chosen. When we say “Minneapolis” sometimes we mean “St. Paul” or “Minnesota.” Our 1st gift is the Mall of America.

Mall of AmericaIt’s all that’s good and bad about America and capitalism.

The Mall of America is the largest mall in the United States, the second-largest in North America, and the most visited in the world with 40 million visitors annually. Loved by shoppers around the world, hated by Twin Citizens. Except when they need something from a store that they can’t find anywhere else.

It boasts The Park at MOA (an indoor theme park complete with rollercoasters), the Lego Imagination Center, Underwater Adventures Aquarium, and a wedding chapel. If you spent 10 minutes at each store in the mall, it would take you 86 hours to see it all.

Hear John Hodgman’s take on the MOA [fast forward to 15:00 (thanks, Nick)], buy it in Monopoly, or pickup up “Made in Minnesota” gifts for all your friends without having to go through security at the airport.

And remember: there’s no sales tax on clothing in Minnesota.

    AH! C’mon!

The ONE thing that the Twin Cities strives hard NOT to be known for! Number One: the arts.

Or even: The constantly overachieving schools/U of MN? Our tradition of have an inordinate amount of important national, historic politicians? Our insane amount of parks — neighborhood and national parks — and our protection of the environment? Hotdish?

    on a related note–

ever heard that stat that we have more theater seats per capita than any other city?
    is that actually true?

I’m still in tears about the MOA choice, however.
At least pick any other of the stereotypes, like “the weather” or “Fargo” haha

    I turned down hotdish.

Number One: the arts. — I had that, and then as I started writing some of them up, I sort of talked about the Guthrie a lot in the The Great Gatsby one, so I ended up dropping it. I might do a follow up.

I keep hearing we have the second most theater seats per capita after NYC.

Chicago listed their awful weather as one of their gifts and their commenters weren’t too fond of it.

    at least it wasn’t spam!

hated by Twin Citizens. Except when they need something from a store that they can’t find anywhere else.

And then you’ll go to the Mall, wade through the sea of humanity, and discover that the one store that has what you wanted is out of stock (even though you called ahead and asked them to hold onto one for you), and you should’ve just bought it online in the first place.

Feh on the MOA. I’ve been there exactly once, and have found no reason to return.
