St. Paul Gay Bar to Close
Over the Rainbow will be closing its doors at the end of the month, making this the second GLBT bar to call it quits this fall. Over the Rainbow was a Cheers type joint with a mainly lesbian crowd, although the Men’s Nights on Mondays always drew a good crowd.
In September, Boom! closed its doors for the last time. Also, the Brass Rail is up for sale in Minneapolis. Although the Brass Rail is planned to remain gay, all these changes beg the question:
Where are all our gay bars going? Is it the economy? Are straight clubs becoming more mixed? What’s going on?

Obviously, Gay is the new Straight… make way for some up and coming “Straight bars!”
Like the Straight 80s. Or the Salon!
For all the faux marketing as a gay welcoming place, Minneapolis and Minnesota are not good places to live as a gay person. With the constant bashing by our elected officials, the 9 month winters, faux-friendly corporations (Target, where does your money go???) and general blandness, there are far fewer gay households here than commonly thought. This area has too many gay nightspots for the tiny population. If the Saloon is crowded it must be Pride weekend, if the Gay 90’s is crowded, it mustn’t be a good time for bachelorette patries, what’s that place on Washingon called?
