Fun with maps

I was helping someone find their way around Minneapolis using Google Maps yesterday, and we came across this satellite image. It’s the intersection of Washington Avenue and 35W in Minneapolis, zoomed in all the way. I’m not sure when the image was taken, but it’s a little slice of traffic life in the Twin Cities. Is it an accident or a work crew? You can see the cones around the back of the truck and lined up along the road.

If you move the map several blocks to the west, you can see the old central library, before the wrecking ball hit, and a crowd gathered on the grass outside the former Federal Reserve building.

Looks like a work crew down a manhole.

I could stay on Google Maps for hours. It’s kind of disturbing when you come across the “blank” spots though, where the military has blocked the satellite view…like the earth has dropped pieces of land out of existence.

I personally like when you have some sections that were taken in summer, and then you clearly have adjacent sections that were taken in winter.
