Myth Nightclub in, ugh, Maplewood
I thought it would never happen, but I’m going to Myth Nightclub to see a show. One of my favorite gay glam groups, the Scissor Sisters, are going to be there in October. I’ll join the ranks of Minneapolis Metrobloggers who have ventured to the suburbs to see an event.
Why do I have so many reservations? To begin with, I don’t want to get shot. Also, I drink at shows. I don’t drink and drive. Imagine how much a cab ride would be from Midtown Phillips to Maplewood then back (roughly $70). I didn’t move this close to downtown to take road trips to the suburbs to see shows.
I don’t blame Myth Nightclub. I blame our downtown clubs and music venues and, of course, Clear Channel. Oh yeah, Clear Channel books Myth’s talent. At any rate, I’ll give Myth Nightclub a shot (and I hope that’s the only shot that night).

Nothing says rock ‘n roll like driving to Maplewood, parking at Toys R Us and buying $10 well drinks.
Nothing says rock ‘n roll like driving to Maplewood, parking at Toys R Us and buying $10 well drinks. — Bwaha! Bwahaha!
Y’all keep talking about this place. I almost kinda want to go see it. I only ever go to Maplewood to go to the Eddie Bauer Outlet.
Yeah, if I’m making that kind of commute to a concert it’ll be a sober night for me…so I guess the $10 well drinks don’t even matter;)
I would’ve been interested in seeing Scissor Sisters live. I downloaded “Laura” a long time ago on iTunes and it’s one of my staples.
wow..im going to guess by these comments that none of you have ever been to MYTH before!I work at MYTH and by reading these comments I cant see why anyone would right away critisize MYTH when you haven’t even been there? “ohhhh MYTH some ridiculously million dollar club out in the suburbs thats gonna cost me a ZILLION bucks to go see my favorite band! out in the middle of maplewood where i might get shot by gangs!!”
Let me fill you in on some info:
1.) Myth is honestly one of the biggest and nicest venues you will ever experience a concert in. We have the top of the line in sound and lighting..ROCK shows…or any shows for that matter just sound and look AMAZING. Secondly…it is ROOMY…downstairs main floor area in front of the stage is perfect for those that love to be up & personal to the band and rock out in the sea of the crowd. Around it is a wrap around section…where it is slightly elevated and closer to the bars( and there are 7 of them open durinh concerts)…at any rate..you are still able to see the concert clearly…AND there are not 1..not 2 not 3 BUT 4….yes 4 giant flat screens on top of the stage..which feeds a live stream on the concert…so theres no WAY you could miss it…there is also a second balcony level..and private skyboxes for the high rollers….when it gets HOT and stuffy…the light crew pushes a button and releases 4 huge clouds of CO 2 to cool the crowd off!oh….and there are a ton of bathrooms so that waiting is never too long and you dont miss the concert
2.) MYTH is not that expensive!!if tickets are ridiculous BLAME the PROMOTERS…..at any rate…”boo-hoo…gas prices are high and taking a cab is expensive”…well going down town is gonna cost you parking..or even more ridiculously priced valet…MYTH has so much FREE parking…yes it is by TOYS R US…but it is worth it! NEXT…the drinks arent anymore expensive than downtown venues or clubs…wells start at 4.50 for your basics..beers are 4.75..and if you cant afford that than find a sober cab and drink before you come! And if plan on getting wasted…yes it is worth paying a cab $70 to get you home safely..rather than carelessly driving drunk.
3.) YES there was one shooting after a rap concert! Although there were maplewood cops & ramsey county sherrifs on top of our many security guys..it still happens…and it can happen ANYWHERE…its already happened COUNTLESS of times downtown by QUEST (another popular concert venue) and on the E block!AND UPtown…another also SAFE place…but bad people can be everywhere and anytime! We have both ramsey sheriffs and maplewood cops and our security staff cooperating with each other EVERY night were open to ensure everyones safety! you are no more SAFER down town than at MYTH!
Anyway…all i really want to say is…dont believe what you hear on the news, and what you “supposedly” think a million dollar venue like Myth might be like….until youve experienced it…sure some people dont like it…and i respect that..cause theyve been there…and experienced it….but most people that have been there…(and we cater to EVERY race, age, young and old, from different classes and cultures, different fans of all kinds) really enjoy their experience there…I invite you to just please come check it out before you judge it with your misconceptions.
sincerely,
yuli
I have heard both good and bad things about the club. I still mean to get up there sometime. I do have to say that it would be cheaper for me to go drink downtown. I can take a cab downtown, drink myself silly and cab home for WAY less then it would cost to go to Myth. I think that is what was being said. I still want to go. I make my own opinions :)
Rock clubs should be in urban centers and neighborhoods and not in suburbs–just another attempt at co-opting and that’s why the Myth is a problem. It isn’t the Myth that is the problem, rather it is just a symptom of something endemic to suburban function, it is the capitalist machinery that is essentially feeding us our dead, like factory-farmed cattle.
Kill the good (capitalist domination). Drag it out to the suburbs (you’re going to start sensing a theme in my supports here). Force feed it back to them (by ClearChannel capitalist domination).
Viva la Capitalista? Nooo.
They should turn it back into a shoe store.
